This is from the last night of a four night straight project, shooting moonlit

startrails at Smaills Beach, in Dunedin.

Very nice work, I really like this effect. Can you tell me if you took more than one exposure to capture the detail in the sand and rock, or was it all extracted from the same exposure?

Kind Regards

Alf

Thanks for your comments - this was all one 32 minute exposure.

The detail in the rocks and sand is helped by the fact that the full moon was behind and slightly to camera left, lighting up the scene nicely. Took away a little from the startrails though!

Cheers,

Many thanks for your explanation, I think the compromise between a more vivid star trail and your well exposed foreground sand / rocks is the best of both worlds. It works for me anyway!

A superb night shot, Vineet.  I like the blues, faint star trails and the line of breaking waves. Have you cropped from the top ?

Yes I've cropped this to 6:12, retaining much of the bottom of the image.

There was a light haze from the city off in the distance which meant that I didn't get the solid bank of swirling stars that I would have hoped for.

And without a denser collection of stars, and without a longer exposure, the shorter startrails towards the top of the image (and at the centre of the trails) ended up looking fragmented and distracting, and this was the simplest way for me to get rid of the distraction and simplify the image.

Thanks for visiting!
