One of the photos I recently did for Natalie Vie, a four time collegiate

champion fencer. I didn't know whether to put it under fashion or sports,

but I think it's closer to fashion…

All it needs is a gekko on the floor beneath the falling dueler. (this comment will make no sense to those who haven't seen an insurance company commercial that is currently running in the USA)

I know what you're talking about.  I always liked the "I've got some good news" Geiko commercials the best…

Great shot!!! The motion has been frozen perfectly!! A visual treat!! Congrats.. Best regards..

PS: Thanks for viewing & rating my photo. Would have helped more if you could have put in some comments explaining the low rating you gave. It would have been useful to me for rectifying my mistakes. Best regards - Suvendra.

Please note the following:

  • This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest.
  • Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Help & Questions Forum.

Visitors have browsed the gallery, found a few striking images and want to know things like why is it a good picture, why does it work? Or, indeed, why doesn't it work, or how could it be improved? Try to answer such questions with your contribution.

Cool image. Style dispatches hidebound rigidity with a flare, winning by shear excitement and love of life.
Would like it better without the words, which turn it into political commentary, and that is becoming tiresome.

Whimsical. Hard to categorize. Call it "10,000 things you can do with an epee- or is that a saber?." I don't know if it works for me on any level. What does it say, does it say anything. Does it need to? Technically and imaginatively a B+. For those of the "overimaged saturated generation" who see it, likely an A-. Would look super great as a catchy ad for something. But something what? (Truly sorry if I rain on the coming parade of admirers. The nature of frank response I guess (There is a big umbrella so its going to be fine and dry.)

Woah! Thank you Elves for choosing this, I've been admiring the photos of the week for years now, never thought I'd get one chosen!

Thanks James, Jon and Gerry for the comments. I'm assuming you mean "vie usa" Jon. Definitely didn't intend that as political commentary, this is actually a pic for Natalie Vie, a collegiate champion fencer from Arizona, that's just her uniform. I can see now how it could be misconstrued! She's got a great name, but in this context it does look a bit like political commentary. Now I don't know whether I should just pretend it's intentional and invite any controversy I can haha.

You are correct Gerry that's an epée. Please rain away, I think the elves choose photos that elicit this type of discussion on purpose. The picture is saying or displaying something specific, but I don't think I'll say now as I like hearing people's opinions fresh, without too much preemption. To be honest (first time for everything), I actually really like certain advertising photography, and I think Avatar should've won the Oscar, so maybe I'm just a product of my ggggeneration. Oh how values change!

My first reaction was that this would be one I wouldn't comment on, since it is very much unlike what I normally go for.

However, it's certainly very interesting, and for me that means a lot.

When I find out she's really a fencer, and this is a study for her, it makes me like it very much.

I think the Elves "have chosen wisely" as the old knight said.

I like the vivid colors, especially the black and white of the dress and umbrella, and I like the way those colors echoe the tiles on the floor.

I have to wonder, though, how much of this is real, and how much is post-shoot. In looking at the figure higher up, her feet do not look like they're touching the stairs, and it seems she's looking at the camera, rather than at her "opponent". Then again, the shadows seem to match, so I'm not sure about any of what I just said.

I like the shot, though. It's different, well executed, and creative...and yes, it could have commercial possibilities...if that's what the photographer is going for.

This has got to be one of the most original and well done images I've seen here.  Fabulous!  Definitely has a creative "Alice in Wonderland" feel to it.  Would love to know the various steps you took to create it.

Is that actually her in the suit as well, or a "body double"?  In any event, I'm sure she must adore this image!

I simply love this picture, I like th originallity, the light, the moment, the composition. I love it. Unfortunelly my knowlage is not enough to find weakness on a picture like this. Great job! Congratulations.
