mark_starr 0 Posted July 19, 2008 Great portrait - a lot of character to his face and very intense eyes. The color of the shirt is great, perhaps because it is a little unexpected. The direct gaze into the camera adds a lot of punch. Have you tried it in black and white? Great shot- Mark Link to comment
dberryhill 3 Posted July 19, 2008 Thank you. I'm not normally very good at approaching strangers, so I was pleased that I had the nerve here. He was driving a restored 1940 Ford, which attracted my interest. But when I got up close, I saw that what I really wanted was a portrait of him. He was congenial, open, and direct. Yeah I briefly looked at it desaturated. But for some reason I preferred it in color. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it just looked more natural to me in color. Again, thanks. This isn't to everyone's taste. Link to comment
mark_starr 0 Posted July 19, 2008 I have found that it is almost always worth engaging people like this, as the best photos come from doing so. I have found that it is very rare after talking with them to have them say they don't want their photo taken. I have been working on getting over this fear as well, and find that even if they say no, what have you lost? Just a photo you wouldn't have taken to begin with! Many street photographers fall back on doing this by claiming spontanaeity is lost, and end up with disengaged, weak photos. As to color or b&w, the colors are great, and even I am forced to admit (although I hate to do it...) that some images should be left in color. It would be a shame to lose his blue eyes- Mark Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted July 21, 2008 You were probably seduced by that Tennessee Vols colored shirt. No matter. It's another of your wonderful portraits. You're so damn good at it. Link to comment

dberryhill 3 Posted July 21, 2008 Thanks guys. You may be right about the color Dave, but I hope not. Link to comment
yves_petit 0 Posted June 12, 2020 Doug, all your photos exude authenticity, this one as well as well as those of battered down farm buildings. In what area of the US were these photos taken? Félicitations! Link to comment
