Round 'n Round

mike_curtis1

This is a picture of my daughter Alyssa as she is being spun around in the backyard. Exposure details. Shutter priority at 1/80 second f/2.8 with -1/3 Exposure Bias. No flash used. ISO 80. Post processing included slight crop and rotate, overall levels adjustment for contrast and then slight PWL. Also, overall saturation and color were boosted as well.

Hey guys/gals. This is a photo of my daughter Alyssa being spun

around in the yard. Would love to know what you all think about it.

Ratings are nice, but actual comments/critiques are better as they

help me improve. Thanks.

Thank you all for the compliments. Greatly appreciated. As for the comment about the sharpness of her face, I agree, but are you judging the smaller version, or the full size one? It would be nice to have it sharper, but it's kinda difficult when everything is moving pretty fast, and the shutter speed is 1/80 to allow the background to blur. As for the technique, I had a friend spin her around while I snapped a bunch of photos. This one was the best of the bunch for expression and clarity. Thanks again.

This is amazing! I know where you were ... you weren't standing were you? You were sitting on your friend's shoulders... that's my guess... hehehe. I can't stop looking at it.. and it's making me dizzy! Awesome movement!

what i want to know is where the camera is! perhaps on the photographer's head? this is just a lovely candid moment and shots like you really reminds one of the fun side to photographing life.

OK, now I have to go and try this. Call me a copycat, but it looks to me like this was a lot of fun making this picture! As far as sharpness goes, it's fine the way it is. You caught the expressions and the colors, and that's what's most important on this kind of photo! Great job!

Mike, while your daughter is clearly a beautiful girl, I do not think she looks happy, as

evidenced by her eyes. I cannot appreciate this image for the fact that, when one does

this to a child, it makes them very dizzy and is destabilizing, even if for a limited period

of time.

It's a neat effect and all, but I feel for your child. I like your photo "Through the Tires"

infinitely more and have critiqued that photo positively.

Sincerely,

Maria

I like the illusion that the shot was taken by the same person holding the child's hands. The amount of blur is also perfect, and I like the vivid colors. One note - when doing this, it's a better idea to hold the child just above the elbows (upper arm), as kids this age are prone to dislocation of the head of the radius (at the elbow) with excessive traction. That injury is known popularly as "nursemaid's elbow."

Maria is mistaken, I'm afraid. Kids actually do love this. Most kids do, anyway. Hang out at a playground and see what they do to themselves on the whirling merry-go-round device. My kids always want me to spin it faster. So this is really not abuse of a subject in order to get a good picture, but rather letting the viewer participate in an activity that kids really enjoy.

Mike, a really great shot, and I see you have done this before in another picture in your portfolio. Doesn't your jaw get tired holding that camera with your teeth?

The colors are marvelous with the contrasting greens and mauve plus the sky blue of the subject's eyes. Really great. My only criticism on the overall image is that I think there is a need for a bit more air above the little girl's hair. It just seems cut off a tad more than it needs to be. That could be cloned in if you wanted to go that route.

Although not a picture I would particularly desire for my walls, I really think it is of commercial value. Not only is it a real attention grabber, but there is blank space for advertising messages. Hope you look into that and make a bundle.
