bevilaqua 0 Posted August 10, 2006 Iceberg - Upsala Glacier - Argentina - Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of a glacier. During its travels, all of the air bubbles that are trapped in the ice are squeezed out, and the size of the ice crystals increases, making it clear. The ice is blue for the same reason water is blue. Namely, it is a result of an overtone of a OH molecular stretch in the water which absorbs light at the red end of the visible spectrum. Jim_Dockery_Photos 2 Posted April 9, 2007 Gorgeous. I too like the contrast of dark background and blue ice, but the breaking wave blowing in the wind makes the shot for me. Makes me shiver looking at it. 7/7 Link to comment
YKV 1 Posted May 3, 2007 Astonishing. It's hard to believe the color is authentic. Perceptual impression is very strong though! Link to comment
