markuskj 0 Posted March 7, 2002 The bell in the foreground was the original bell from the church that was lost in the devastating earthquakes. I was in contention as to whether to make the church or the bell in focus, in the end I went for the church because I liked the design of the door. All comments welcome, especially concerning composition and focus. Also, any ratings give me a better understanding of its appeal. Many thanks guys, Markus Link to comment
mark_smith12 0 Posted March 7, 2002 Nice color and contrast. I think I would have gone for a little less depth of field and blurred the bell in the foreground a little more. The design on the bell detracts from the design on the door. Also, with the bell overlapping the door detracts from the door as well. Overall, a strong and appealing photograph. Link to comment
brian_m2 0 Posted March 7, 2002 I like your subject and concept here, but you've made some technical errors by overlapping the bell and the church that are quite jarring. Also, in a picture like this I would have focused on making the white church really stand out as white, and it seems too gray/dark on my monitor (though it might be my monitor). You maybe could have opened the exposure up a stop. Link to comment

gooseberry 0 Posted March 11, 2002 I would recommend something exactly opposite to what Mark suggested: I would go for a tack-sharp bell with fuzzy church in the background. As for overlaps, they might be very effective, so on general principal I don't fully agree with Brian. In this case, however, something is not quite right: (1) the bell merges with the door; and (2) the horizontal stick supporting the bell cuts off the tower. I don't know how much room to maneuver and what focal lengths did you have at your disposition, so it's hard to suggest a specific solution to improve perspective. Link to comment
