jemini_joseph
Is there any place I can buy a used G1548? I try to buy everything used to save some money. I've seen it's been sold for around 550 in eBay. But didn't see any for a month now. Is there any shops selling it used or demo?

If one of you guys trying to sell one of them please let me know. I'm looking for a mint/Ex++ condition tripod.

Thanks
www.color-pictures.com
derek_hill1
You might want to check with Robert White in the UK, they sell Gitzo stuff much cheaper than officially imported US stuff. Their website is HERE and they have a currency calculator right on their website. I have purchased several Gitzo products from them and have saved around 40% each time, compared to B&H prices. Hope that helps.
jemini_joseph
Derek
Thanks for the response.
I've tried the price with Robert White many times. I never found it's cheaper there. In fact all the time it was more expensive. Now the price for 1548 is 424 and it's conversion is 733 which is more than B&H price. I guess the shipping is going to be more too. It might be an option when US dollar is really strong or Pound is really weak. Still I cannot imagine it can be 40% cheaper. Am I doing something wrong? dale_sandford
The information about Robert White being less expensive is out of date. It was true at one time, but not in the last 6 months to a year. I don't think I've seen any G1548 for sale used. I have seen numerous G141x & G150x leg sets for sale. If one of the aluminum sets meets your needs, you might look for one of them. -- D
jemini_joseph
Dale
Thanks for the response. This make sense. I've been checking their price for last one year when I bought my first gitzo. It was 1340. I still have it. The weight is about perfect for me(6.7LB). But I like to have some more stability to use with 500mm+ TC. I cannot carry more weight around. That's why I've decided to buy 'the ultimate' tripod. 700 dollars is little extreme for me. That's why I'm trying to find something around 500-550. I'm sure I've seen them in eBay. I may have to wait. While I'm waiting I thought I'll see if there's any other shops around. That's why I put the question. Hope this will help others too..

Nice weekend.
walterh
Jemini - I am a very patient person - still i think i am running out of patience waiting for one of those - with or without the center column. i got the equivalent of the G1348 in Al - some 30 years now. its a bit beaten up but still working fine. for about one year now i am trying to find a used carbon one to replace the heavy one i carried so many miles :-) (the old ones seem even a bit heavier than the newr Al-ones) . so far no luck. if i see them in ebay (germany) they go for like 101 Euro for a couple of days - then the last 10minutes they go up to 600 Euro - the price i can get one new in the netherlands. i bet there are 20 guys sitting at their laptops wherever they are betting on the carbon gitzo the last minutes of the sale. just bad luck (crying) . cheers walter
Rod Sorensen
I just got a new 1548 at ebay, but only saved about $55 off the street prices. Used ones are infrequent and get top dollar. If you aren't in a rush, you can probably get a decent used one in the $550 range, but you may have to wait for a few months. Dan is totally on about Robert White. They were a good place to go for these about a year and a half ago, but now if would be much more expensive from there than B&H or RRS. I wouldn't waste a lot of time looking for new ones for under $700, because I did every search I could think of and looked at a lot of web sites and didn't find one for less. For a new one in the states I'd go either B&H or RRS.
14mm 2.8l
Add me to the list who need this lens to support a lowlight telephoto purchase. Since I got my 400mm 2.8 L I have researched this topic and I assume the reason why Robert White is so pricey now is due to the devaluation of the US Dollar. 1 Euro at $1.21 US and 1 pound at $1.72. Its stunning how the dollar value has dropped since W assumed control. Wasn't it 1 Euro at .89c US and 1 pound at $1.40 just a couple years ago. With the continuing free fall in our US currency this G1548 CF at B&H may soon be a best value at just $704 plus delivery. When stock runs dry B&H will have to replace them with undervalued dollars. Thus they will cost more...
Two23
I looked for a year to get one off eBay or another used source. Few that have them sell them. There aren't very many out there to start with. On eBay they tend to sell for within 90% of new. Not enough for me to buy one without warranty! So, I bought a new 1325CF from Allens Camera in Pennsylvania. They were slightly less than B&H. I really doubt you will ever find a used one that is much of a bargain. They are few in number, few come up for resale, and they are in high demand. Kent in SD
Two23
<<. First, the reason the price at B&H went down has more to do with a change in the way it was sold through U.S. distributors vs. direct in Europe. Nikon is also higher, RIGHT? Second, a falling dollar is a GOOD thing. It helps American goods to be a better value overseas. The grain from South Dakota is flying out of here to overseas markets and we are making money. There are more jobs around here now, farmers have more money and that is certainly noticeable in our local economy. Unemployment in U.S. is going down and a lower $ is part of the reason. So what if a few "toys" (such as CF tripods) for us elites might cost a little more! Our Boeing aircraft now cost less overseas, and that means JOBS! And please, please, tell me exactly what it is a U.S. president can do that has much effect on the dollar? International trade etc. is now very diffuse and international. My fear that with recent record setting U.S. economic growth (best since the Reagan years, BTW,) that the $ will now rise in value. 14mm 2.8l
1 quarter of record setting growth and a 4 trillion dollar national debt that has almost doubled today to over 7 trillion dollars since W assumed control. With no policy shift in sight and an easy re-election ,now is the best time to plunk down $704 plus $15 delivery for the coveted G1548 CF. Charge it today and have it next Friday. Its that simple. ShunCheung
As recently as 3 years ago or so, Gitzos used to be consierably cheaper at Robert White in the UK than at B&H and other US stores. Some friends of mine had bought from R. White and saved quite a bit, like 30% or so. But Gitzo prices have dropped in the US to match the lower UK prices. BTW, IMO the 1548 is an overkill for any 500mm/f4 or smaller lens. Essentially you are trading off the main adavntage of carbon fiber, which we pay dearly to save some weight. I know quite a few poeople who are happy using their 600mm/f4 lenses on 13xx Gitzos. For those who use 400mm/f2.8 or 600mm/f4, the 1548 can be better, though. 14mm 2.8l
Thats great historical pricing insight Shun, thank you! Real glad to know I can wait till next spring to afford this G1548 purchase since you are saying the G1548 price will hold firm irregardless of currencies. I'll bump up the Wimberley purchase to the top of my shopping list now.
ShunCheung
Hey, I am not going to speculate on currency exchange. If I could do that accurately on a regular basis, I would have been very rich. I think as of yesterday 1 Euro was US$1.21 while it used to be 1 Euro = US$0.8 a couple of years back. If the dollar keeps on going down like this, European products (Gitzo is French, a Euro country) will certainly get more expensive here in the US. Kodak film will get cheaper in Europe, but how many people still use that? :-)
jemini_joseph
No comments about the dollar value stuff. :)
The answer is clear I guess. Now it's more expensive in UK than here. I saw in eBay it's going for 550 not long ago. Anyway if the price is going to be like this in eBay I would get new one with LIFE TIME warranty from Gitzo.

Shun
The reason that I'm going for 1548 to use with a 500mm (it's not even 500/4, it's 500mm f/4.5 HSM weighs only 6.8LB) is that I use the lens lots of time with 1.4X TC and 2X TC. I found the result is quiet acceptable if the tripod is strong enough or the shutter speed is high enogh. Here's an example. I would get lot more birds just hanging around with a 1000mm lens than sitting in the blind with 500mm. I'm greedy :) This is scanned with Nikon LS-30 and applied NO USM. So the sharpness is much better than you see here.

This is taken with 340 tripod at it's two legs extended. Shutter speed 1/100 Provia pushed 1 stop @ f/5.6(Effective f/11). If the shutter speed goes below 1/100 I won't get acceptable result. Do you think I will gain a lot just upgrading to G1348 or G1325? I've tried G1325 from a friend of mine and I wasn't happy enough. I'm convinced that tripod is equally important like lens.
roy1
Try adding the ebay search to your "favorite searches" that way you can have ebay automatically e-mail you when one is put up for auction. good luck :)
dave_coleman
Keep checking ebay; a used 1548 was put up for bid last Tuesday evening, but it sold for $500 on the "buy it now" option almost immediately.
jemini_joseph
Thanks guys. I already have an automatic search on eBay. But I didn't see this buy it now. I could have bought that. Wow!! 500 for 1548? No wonder it moved so fast. Anyway I'll keep looking. Cheers..
