rob_sato
Aloha. I shoot color neg film mostly. Occasionally slide. There was a clearance on house brand film at the local Safeway. At $1 for a four pack of 24 exposure ISO 200, it was hard to ignore. The film says made in E.U. or European Union. I know Agfa and Ferrania (3m/Scotch) make house brand films. Since both Germany and Italy are part of the E.U. I don't know which company it would be. Agfa does make decent film, just have to make sure the lab can print it. I haven't seen Ferrania out at all lately. Their latest 100 speed film is rated at RMS 3.5, making it along with one other film (an Agfa professional one) the finest grained film out there( if going strictly by RMS numbers.) I also saw an independent test of the five major film manufacturers' ISO 200 speed films that was posted May 2003. The Ferrania 200 outperformed them all. Hard to believe but true. Just wanted to know if this Safeway E.U. stuff is Agfa or Ferrania. Thanks. M.Sato
the_macman
It says made in EU, it doesn't say the world headquarters of the manufacturer are located in the EU... so it could be anything. Remember that the intention of a house brand manufacturer is rarely to be tracked down :) Agfa, Ferrania and Konica openly make house brands. By trying random combination to help out your search on google, I read that both some Walgreens and Safeway 400 is made by Fuji. If it's true, who says Fuji doesn't have a plant in the EU? :) Kodak officially doesn't make house brand film. Do you believe it? Ilford is in the EU, I don't know their official position. winfried_buechsenschuetz1
There are not so many plants making color film in Europe, and the only ones are owned by Agfa and Ferrania (which has got independent again after some years of 3M ownership). But you can check it yourself: if the shadows or underexposed parts of the slides have a dark greenish overtone, and if unexposed (black) parts of the film have a greenish shine when held against a strong lamp it should be Agfa. BTW, even in Germany Agfa slide films are sold under different brand names (Perutz for example).
aguilabrava
B&H Photo sells some film branded Photo Porst that is supposed to be the name brand of a chain of photo stores in Germany, but according to B&H's description of this film, it's actually Fuji Sensia 100 made in Japan. The actual name on the film's package is Photo Porst ChromeX-100. Therefore that film you are talking about could be anything. The only way to know then would be to purchase this film, shoot it, and see what it is after processing.
winfried_buechsenschuetz1
Photo-Porst does not exist in Germany any more, so the films sold by B+H obviously come from the stock of this chain which closed approx. one year ago, so the expiry date might come soon. However, AFAIK the Porst films are marked 'made in Japan', since Fuji does NOT have plants in Europe. If a film has an european name it does NOT mean it was manufactured in Europe. Again, the only companies making color (slide and print) films in Europe are Agfa and Ferrania.
h.lloyd-thomas
I have some Fuji Superia 200/400 film recently purchased in the UK which says on the box "Made in the EU by Fuji Photo Film, The Netherlands".
rolf_van_den_brink
Fuji has a large production facility in Tilburg, the Netherlands. According to their website it's where Fuji makes the film for the EU, the Middle East and Africa.
gareth_harper
Ilford, Kodak, 3M and Agfa all manufacture in the EU. Soon brands like Tura, Forte and others will also be under the EU umbrella.
winfried_buechsenschuetz1
Thanks for the correction concerning film manufacturing in the EU. All Fuji films I bought until now in Germany were made in Japan. AFAIK Kodak films were never sold with other brand names. But the most probable candidates for 'off brand' film made in the EU are Agfa and Ferrania. Even in Germany you can get rebranded Agfa films (Perutz) which sometimes is even cheaper than the original brand (which is the cheapest 'brand name' film in Germany). spacenuke
the Photo Porst slide film I bought from B&H last Thursday expired in 10/2003, which is exactly what their website stated.
