root
"The true test is what 50,000 visitors per day think and do." Catch - 22. Only a minority speak up who are then determined by you to only speak for themselves or a few other dissenters if you don't like it, presumably for the majority if you do. What we all do is a function of what's offered, not what we might prefer. How can you measure what people don't do, except to notice that there is a significant turnover on this forum which you once attributed to boredom. What statistical evidence supports that conclusion? That flies in the face of daily forum questions like this one.
abintraphoto
<would like this to be an even toned discussion - directed at no one in particular> .............................. I neglected to mention earlier that 'what I think doesn't matter' ........................... (-; Maybe we (PN) could experiment with setting up a 'poll' on a specific issue and see how it goes (as far as being useful information). Maybe I should post a question in the forum and set it up as a 'poll' myself. Maybe a question like "Should 1 & 2 be eliminated from the rating # choices ?" or "Should we go back to a 1-10 scale ?" ( I liked it better) or "Whom should we ban next ?" ........ (Bob and I vote for each other).
bob_pictaker
Ken, you vote for Doug and I'll vote for Vincent! They're a couple of trouble makers. :-))
vincetylor
Thanks a lot Bob! And then who should I vote for??....I know who you all think I would vote for...but you would probably be wrong. I can't help but think of that song posted on a few other messages, "Trollin trollin trollin, Keep them posts a trollin, Raw Hide!"
peter_daalder
I think that Bobby Douglas should be banned - you spend far too much of your time in his portfolio, while neglecting mine... ;-)
peter_daalder
Oh, I forgot...
Have become one of Brian's statistics and stopped uploading. Never mind! I'm paid up until 01-Sep-2006. Plenty of time to start afresh.
peter_daalder
I owe you a proper response to this thread. Those last half dozen posting got off topic IMO (including mine).
In some ways, you remind me of Keith Laban. You've been a member of photo.net longer than I, have contributed intensively to the fora (forums, for some) and only very recently ventured into the Gallery. Your initial reaction is reminiscent of what happened to Keith. Big difference is that the rather artistic quality of your work will not be understood by many who drive through this place. You've been around long enough to have known this. If this is not the case, then I have to conclude that you have not looked around the Gallery side of photo.net for long enough. If you want a visual challenge, go and have a look here. This guy is good (no sarcasm intended, I mean it!), but not everyone appreciates his approach to photography. erin_____grasshopper__rice
We have a wonderful website in photo.net. I think it's fair to say that we have all learned a great deal from others here. Sometimes our egos get the best of us and we all do things that are probably not in the spirit of, or best interest of the site. When that happens, wether it's us or so,meone else doing it, it's a good idea to just remember the golden rule I guess. How can we band together to keep mate raters, drive by raters, and anyother type of "bad" rater from having "power" over our website, our pictures and our gallery? I think maybe the first step is to do just that, band together. Have basically just one big informal critique circle. Anyone with a 6 month or longer tenure, at least 6 uploaded pictures and 500 ratings or 300+ comments can join. (Rules subject to change) Then all the "members" just make a commitment to honestly critique and rate the other "members" photos.
This is just an idea, a blueprint. I'm sure improvements could be made. The main thing is that it remain informal, noone is forced to join. Also, that the "entry rules" are followed. If you don't have all those things, you can't be apart of it. So, how do we keep "others" from commenting? Well, basically, whenever we upload pictures we'd like to have critiqued we'll put them in a presentation and send them only to members of the circle. All or some, it doesn't matter. Your commitment is that you will honestly rate AND comment on the pictures you're sent. And we can add some guidelines on number of photos allowed in a presentation, etc.
I have some other ideas for this but that's the gist of it. abintraphoto
Thank you for your positive input Erin ...................... How would you feel about starting a new thread with your suggestion ? ................... I think we wore this one out .......................... erin_____grasshopper__rice
I was kinda thinkin' the same thing Ken. Perhaps I will. Keep your eyes peeled.
leanne_newton
Wow Erin, it`ll take me a couple of years to qualify... In your experience, does this e-mail circle help, or does it exclude new input ? `Into every life a little rain must fall`~ ( Wodehouse, I believe )
