Test shots around the house using Adox CMS 20ii. Developed in Adotech iv. Nikon FE and 55mm Micro. Detail was mind blowing but the web size jpegs can’t really show it all.

mjferron you are right about the detail. It is quite good.

James I found ISO 4-6 is what gets the shadows in check. Exposures in this series ranged from 1/4 sec to 20 @ F11.

I finally processed and scanned some photos from our New Zealand trip. These few are from Tutukaka on the North Island. I only brought the humble Nikon EM with a 50/3.5 macro lens, very light and capable travel combo. Film was Fujifilm C200 (Japan version), Bellini C41 home processed.

Fine photographs of Tutukaka, Bruce, certainly one of the prettiest areas in the upper North Island. Here are some from a Mamiya 645 1000s using a 135mm Mamiya-Sekor C f/3.5 lens.  I've had this lens in the Mamiya kit for several years and I can't recall having ever used it, as I tend to use the two zoom lenses for longer focal lengths. The film was Kentmere 400 developed in Spur Acurol-N.

Well the "glutton for punishment"  that I am, I have persevered with my less than satisfactory results. Among the many recent catastrophes was a complete wash on a roll from the Yashica Mat 124. I have always been dissatisfied with the results. It seemed it flared easily. I promised myself I would shoot with a shade...next time. 🙂 Additionally, JohnS posted once with a TLR in his experience suffered "internal reflections that resulted in flare" .  A light went on when I read that. Most recently I read on a Yashica TLR website that the "baffling" was done differently on some iterations. Also others claimed a "gassing out" of the rear element as causing the "flare" problem.  JohnS re-iterated that. So I did remove the rear element, although I didn't see anything on "Bulb". What I found was not too good. While the roll I put through it using the shade was a complete wash (user error in handling=??), I shot another roll. The results were not encouraging.  Additionally, in the previous darkroom session I was disappointed with the results from the Sonnar in the Contax IIa. The highlights were mottled and there was a seemingly loss of overall contrast (flare?) Another contributor (AJG), hinted that perhaps my chemicals were exhausted. I have now shot a new roll with the Yashicamat (duhhh forgot the shade ) and the results were underwhelming. I also re-shot the Contax/Sonnar and those results were also underwhelming.
Next: Mix new chemicals. [Although my stock solution D76 is kept in filled to the brim 1 liter brown bottles away from the sunlight... they may be reaching the recommended 6 month shelf life.] I will toss the the liter and then some ..that I have.  So I've now wasted two rolls of 120 and 2 rolls of 35mm. Live and learn 😞

Film was Foma100 for the TLR and APX 100 for the Contax...souped in D76 1:1

The rear element... pretty dodgy looking... most of the indelible marks are towards the "open" edges??

Your Contax images look good this time.  I think you're right that that Yashica lens is a problem  and I hope that the rear element can be cleaned up, since that could account for the poor performance.  I owned one of those back in the early 80's and got decent results at the time and only sold it because I got a deal on a Rollei 3.5 E with a Planar lens that was in excellent shape that I still own to this day.  When I bought the Rollei it cost me less than a film back would have cost for a Hasselblad!  The Planar beat the Yashica lens at wide apertures and at the edges but not by a huge amount.  Your other potential issue is film flatness--Rollei always had a decent reputation for that, but I don't think the Yashica TLRs were known to have a problem with it.  Lens hoods have been something that I have always insisted on for any lens that I own, especially older single coated or uncoated lenses.  Vented hoods for your f/1.5 Sonnar are readily available on eBay for under $10 and are a worthwhile investment. If nothing else, they keep wayward fingers away from the front element.

That's surely the problem Chuck, even without internal baffling or without the lens hood, the Yashicamat should give much more contrasty results. Have you tried to clean it? It looks as if someone did. It's similar to one I had, in the end I used toothpaste to get the crud off. There's also the possibility that the balsam cementing to pair together has degraded.

Hi @rick_drawbridge February was a good time to explore North Island, a bit off peak tourist season. In addition to Tutukaka, we also visited Rotorua and Aukland. With the family I need to travel light, so only brought Nikon EM and 55/3.5 macro lens. I wish I had more manual control for challenging lighting conditions. 4x5 or 6x12 will do its justice if I were to travel alone there for photography.

Hi @chuck_foreman1 I'm happy to see your high quality photos out of the Contax/Sonnar: they really shines even in today's standards.

Thank you BruceZ. The images I posted were the those with the best contrast. The weather has been "dull" with only short periods of sun. Hope to do more with this lens/camera soon!
