The elk rut is at full throttle at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. I'm blessed that it's only a short drive from my Denver-area home. This is a mature bull elk, near the peak of his potential development. (They peak around 7-YO and then decline pretty quickly). This guy has a harem of around 25 cows. While I was watching, one cow left for another nearby harem. When another cow attempted a change of allegiance, he ran to head her off and send her back to his harem.

My lodging was just outside the park and I heard bull elk bugling all night long. Poor guys, hardly get any rest. If human men had the same sex cycle of elks, we'd only have wars for four weeks per year.

Oh, that grass on his head is from "rubbing" the ground to mark. They rub small trees, bushes and the prairie grass, to mark with scent glands on their heads.
