Utah Prairie Dog (Cynomys parvidens) checking things out from behind the top of his burrow diggings. This colony is located near the lodge at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. I spent about two hours attempting to capture good images of these critters. They are harder to photograph than I had imagined. They move from place to place underground, popping up unannounced and ducking back down again. When they make their chirping warning call their whole bodies vibrate at very high frequencies, making for motion blur even a high shutter speed settings. Now that I've seen these images I need to go back and try again with a few adjustments. Nikon D500 + Nikkor 200-500mm/5.6 @ 500mm, f6.3, 1/2500s, ISO 320. Dieter Schaefer
Dieter, I assume that is a white-crowned sparrow?? Perhaps immature: White-crowned Sparrow Identification, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology Possibly - I am usually at a loss when it comes to identifying sparrows. We do observe white-crowned in the area - this was taken in February. Same bird from the front: Untitled
