War and Remembrance

This photo is of my grandfather, TSGT William Gower, assigned to Wheeler Field at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I think my grandmother took the shot several days before the attack. During the attack, "Grandpa Bill" took a machine gun and ammo up to the roof of one of the buildings at Schofield Barracks, and fired at Japanese aircraft. His actions were later re-enacted by Burt Lancaster in the movie, From Here To Eternity.

I was a Pearl Harbor survivor at age 2. My entire family, three generations, was there, at Schofield Barracks. We never talked about it. In 1951, while my dad was in Korea, my mother and I saw From Here To Eternity at a local theater. During the attack scenes, I looked at her and saw she was crying. I never really new why until much later, when I learned more of the details...1602161787_BillGower.jpg.23c04d9e3791229ef3e6d8f000073c20.jpg
