clive_murray_white
I regularly take 2 pictures with my D800 of the same subject within a second or so of each other using aperture priority, the pictures are invariably differently exposed, like this, pic No: 1, 1000 @ f5.00, pic No: 2 120 @ f 5.00.

Pic No: 2 was correctly exposed.

Any reason for this?
Matt Laur
If the subject has moved, you've altered your composition, or the available light has changed, that could easily tell the camera's computer to alter the shutter speed. But it's impossible to guess without more information.

What is the subject ... a still in the studio? A landscape outdoors in varying light? A human subject that's not sitting perfectly still?

How are you metering - matrix, spot, etc?

Do you by any chance have exposure bracketing turned on?
ShunCheung
Right, exposure bracketing is one thing I would double check early on. That is one feature that can easily be unintentionally switched on the D300 and D700 type cameras, and that was exactly what happened to me within the first month of my D300 ownership. Fortunately, Nikon has improved on that design on the D800 and subsequent cameras.

Otherwise, please provide more info and some sample images as Matt pointed out.
raczoliver
One more vote that the auto exposure bracketing function is turned on, especially if the built in meter also suggested that the first shot was underexposed.
