michael_carter5
My Vivitar 2800 seems to be going bad. I just bought another used one and that may tide me over.
Is there a new unit that I can count on that used the X sync cable like the Vivitar does?
thanks
Michael Carter
steve_parrott
I think that might be like asking what new car can you buy that has an 8 track tape player in it. There might be a new flash that still has a PC hook up, but I don't know of any. I was going to suggest just getting a new Vivitar 285HV, but even that seems to be out of production. The used market is probably going to be your only choice. You could contact KEH. No doubt they have plenty of flashes that would work, many in like new condition.

Link

Lastly, have you considered not using the PC cord and instead using a remote radio trigger? This would allow you to use any flash you wanted and is far easier than coping with that cord. Of course, that is assuming your camera has a hot shoe in which to mount the transmitter.
robert_bowring
Hard to beat the Vivitar 283 or 285. Plenty of used ones around so they are pretty inexpensive. Buy several so you always have a backup.
craig_shearman1
Almost any flash (with the exception of a view that are slave-only or have an odd proprietary connection) can be used with a sync cord, including current modern flashes. If a flash only has a hot shoe and no connection for a cord, all you need is an adaptor like this one:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1130423-REG/impact_scs_mpc_male_pc_to.html

My Nikon SB-900 has a connection for a PC cord, although it's a female connection like you have on a camera, so you need a male-to-male cord. I have never seen a flash without a sync cord connection, although I understand some of the lower end current models don't have a connection. Again, no problem -- just use an adaptor.

I'm a big fan of the Vivtar 283/285. The current Vivitar 285 has received bad reviews -- it is not actually made by Vivitar, which went out of business several years ago, but by a third-party who bought the rights to the name. Used ones, which cost under $50, are actually better.

john_narsuitus

"What new flash can I buy for a 6x7 using X sync cable?"

I replaced my aging Vivitar flash units with Yongnuo YN 560 IV flash units. My Fuji 6x7 has a cold shoe and a female X sync port. The Yongnuo also has a female X sync port. Therefore, I use a male to male X sync cable.
