A good first Nikon Wednesday of meteorological autumn to everyone north of the equator. Not that you'd notice here, as it's incredibly hot and sticky, yet. But it was still some good weather for a late afternoon of some casual shooting at the famed Gravelly Point, just up-river by a few yards from DC's Reagan National Airport. The aviation photography nerds can be seen gathering there in large herds, armed with lenses that would make the bird photographers weak in the knees. I was just playing around with the trusty 70-200/2.8 in the fading light. It really is a fun place to spend a little time, if you like big loud things roaring inches over your head. Aluminum? Feathers? Shot anything with any kind of wings? Share!

00dTCt-558285484.jpg.04adb2c7510556f43f8827e087fcf92e.jpg

Matt, love the shot with people at the end of the runway, but where is the boundary security fence between the people and the runway ?
Chip, nice sky shot, what exposure ?

At Shorham airshow previous weekend, the guy enjoying the show from the wing of the Spitfire caught my eye and this is the result. The day started great, but ended in tragedy though in front of my eyes. 11 people lost their lives when the Hawker Hunter crashed onto the crowded motorway with the sad loss of all those lives. A truely terrible experience.
D700, iso 1250, 170mm, f/18, 1/250

The previous weekend at Duxford airfield during a non-airshow, normal museum day, this was some of the activity going on.
D700, iso 200, 85mm, f/11, 1/80

D700, iso200, 85mm, f/16, 1/60

A fun thread this week folks - nice!

Andrew: I was wondering if someone would ask that question. The boundary fence is actually more of a moat. Hidden by the angle at which I shot that is an inlet off of the Potomac that separates Gravelly Point from the grounds of the airport. If you use Google Maps and search for the airport (or the park), you'll see how it works. Makes for an unusual view, doesn't it?
