Opening up Helios-44-2 2/58

Recommended Posts

Hello friends,
I have some experience with opening up lenses but I am unable to figure out how to open Helios-44-2 from the front part esp. to access the aperture blades because they have come off.
I've searched online and found few videos but I haven't actually found what I am looking for. In one of the video, the volgger asks to rotate the front part to open the lens but the lens that I have won't open this way....
Please do not ask me to send them to a repair centre as there are none around me (I live in a remote village in India-China border) and also the lens is so beaten that the expense of sending it somewhere far won't justify it. Also I have prior experience opening up lenses and cleaning them so someone who knows, please help me out.
Thank you.

You can't access the aperture blades on those lenses: they are BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN (insert rim shot here)

I joke, forgive me:)

I have had several of these, and it appears to me that they vary in their assembly methods depending on age (I am told even from one week to another, but can't confirm that). If you have any means of uploading a picture of the exact lens I could see if I have one that looks exactly like yours and then perhaps we can try together to break my lens as well...uhm I mean - try to figure out how to get into yours.

Hi Kenri, you cannot get to the aperture rings from the front, only remove the front element by unscrewing the tiny slotted retaining ring, and then with a gentle tap or a suction pad you can remove the second element. To open up the lens to access the aperture rings, hold the focus ring in one hand, and then unscrew the lens anticlockwise by holding the the aperture stop down ring in the other hand. You will find that the barrel separates in half between the stop down ring and the aperture numbers. From there on it should appear obvious if you have done lens repairs before. Good luck. Chris.

Kenri, sadly mine appear somewhat different. But, as Chris said it appears that they all appear to separate in the fashion he descibes. It appears that some force is required which feels quite worrisome when you try to do it. I would imagine that an older lens that obviouslyhas some stories to tell may take more effort.

Chris Garner, Thank you for your reply. Yes, I saw in one of the tutorial how to open up the lens this way but even after applying some force, this lens won't open up. It s in a very beaten condition...
Gordon Yee, Thanks for the video! I've already watched it last night and same thing... I am not able to open up the lens even after some force...
I guess I need to by a new one for him since he gave it to me for lens cleaning and when I opened up the rear glass and tried to clean the glass part before the aperture blades, the blades moved from their original place.
Peter Galuszewski Thanks nevertheless.

Since you're already in a position to "replace it", go to school on it, who cares if you make it worse?

You need to think outside the box. Reality is, no matter how beat-up the lens is, the entire lens unit detaches from the front.
So think about applying heat. You know, in case the last tech used a "Loctite" substance on the internal securing threads.
Then employ the use of something that provides better grip & torque; like two rubber wrenches.

Remember, never give up. With that in mind, a lens has never defeated me...
