When I bought a D3200 it came with a WU-1A for wi-fi connection and now I sometimes use it with my D7100, but I was always frustrated that it never connected to Windows and Nikon app is poor.
Looks like there is a least one software CamRanger, as cited today on another thread as a option to remote control for iOS, and it works also for Windows, but it is a little expensive for me. Reading the post I remembered of DigiCamControl a free software that actually I had installed on my laptop that controls Nikon and other camera brands via USB. I check if there was any update and for my surprise it now supports WU-1A, D5300 and D7500 wi-fi connection.

I gave a try and it is easy to connect and have full control of the camera, no need of anything else between the camera and laptop. Just connect the laptop wireless to the Nikon device (it will say limited access) and click to connect on the software, is done. As a free software it worth a try. Gives full control of D7100, including movies. The transfer of the pictures is slow but you can opt to leave the pictures on the camera and download later.

The link is http://digicamcontrol.com/
Note: I have nothing to do with this software website, just happy to make a better use of my WU-1A.
