mood_lover
I am considering buying the AB800 light and have this 3x4 softbox: http://www.fjwestcott.com/36-x-48-softbox-silver-interior

1) is it too big for the AB800 to support and power evenly from corner to corner?
2) this softbox has 4 basic rods, where do I get a speedring to make it compatible with the AB800?
http://www.paulcbuff.com/speedrings.php - is it the first one?

thanks!

AJG
Howard is right--you need the correct speed ring from Westcott to work with this soft box. As for weight, you might check the specs for both the Buff equivalent and the Westcott. The current Buff soft boxes are extremely easy to assemble and break down; my experience with older (20 years ago) Photoflex models with 4 separate rods were not happy ones, and I always needed a pair of pliers to disassemble them on location.
ellis_vener_photography
1) No. 2) Howard is correct about which speed ring and attachment adapter you need.

Do any of you know what the largest softbox I can get for the B800 is? I dont want it falling over or anything, let me know please thank you.
mood_lover
Sorry ignore my last question, what I was really wanting to know is how to offset the weight if I put a large softbox on the small alienbee? I often have my lights tilt forward even after I tighten the screw and so I'm not sure what the fix for that is.
bob_bill
I keep a folding speed ring on my 3x4. I forget what brand, and no markings on it. Perhaps someone else knows. It allows me to transport a photoflex rectangular box assembled but flat, they don't work with more than 4 rods, and just snap it open on location. Size of box on an alien bee. I used a 7' octa. on a 1600 for a while and use it on an einstein. Be sure to use a sand bag or 2. Buy them empty and fill with clean sand from home depot or on site, I use rocks in bags carried empty. Quick in and out.
howard_m
Bob, maybe the folding speedring is from Chimera. I have one that has 4 rotating locking levers for the rods that go from flat to 90 degrees.

From what I've seen, a good speedring can usually be mixed-n-matched to other brand SB's.
ellis_vener_photography
The largest I use on my Einsteins (same mont) is the 56x72 inch Chimera SuperPRO. but I mount the speedring directly to the stand. Keep in mind that as with all things if you are working outside, the greater the surface area the greater the force even the slightest of breezes will generate.
