<p>Preston Dunlap, a fine local musician, died last week. I only got to see him perform once, at Hip Pocket Theater last summer. I never got around to posting these, all taken with the Nikon V1 and 50/1.8D AF Nikkor via the Fotodiox all-manual adapter, all at ISO 800-1600. Nice combo, once I dialed in the guesstimated exposure, and most turned out sharp despite the lack of VR and my usually shaky mitts.</p>

<p>And <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6vHIhBaxck"><strong>here's a video</strong></a> from that performance, also using the V1 and 50/1.8 Nikkor. The built-in mics sound pretty good when conditions are right - I added a little homebrewed wind screen made from some foam and velcro tape. You can see how shaky my hands usually are - YouTube's software stabilization went nuts trying to compensate for my shake, and the odd distortions lend an appropriate hallucinatory vibe to this haunting rendition of Townes Van Zandt's "Marie". That's Bruce Payne on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jack "Bullett" Harris on brushes, and Preston weaving those subtle guitar lines in and around the tune. They'd rehearsed only once but I think they may have performed together before. I never would have guessed these fellows didn't gig regularly. <a href="
