pemongillo
I have been procrastinating for about a year regarding purchase of this software. I have finally decided to purchase it and I can't find hide nor hair of it on the net for sale anywhere. Is Nik gone?

Paul
jack_landry
Nik is now a Google brand and as far as I know, you can't buy a single application such as Silver Efex: you must buy the whole collection
http://www.google.com/nikcollection/
eric_brody
Jack is correct. I'd like to add that it is a truly remarkable piece of software. I've been using it since the original. I'm currently taking a four week black and white printing course in which it is featured. I do not have experience with the other modules but Silver Effex is great. Like most other complex and sophisticated photo software (Photoshop, any HDR software) it can also be used to make a genuinely awful file. Beware of overuse!
pemongillo
Thanks. I hate to see Google spreading its empire< BUT that is an amazing price for all of that software. I believe it was $199 for just SE pro last year. $149 for it all is amazing. Thanks again.

al_derickson
You might as well use Google to help you buy it cheaper. If you search for coupon code nik collection you should be able to find a 20 per cent off code.
JDMvW
I got the package from Google when they took it over.

I thought I would use it only a little, but found out it (the whole package, that is) is good for lots of things besides giving color images that 'neon-edge' look in HDR.
William Kahn
I have to echo Alan's question. I've been using Topaz BW Effects 2 for several months. It's very effective, costs about $60...
stp
If Nik (Google) is offering the entire collection for $149, that's a great bargain.
Sycamoe
I love all the Nik plug-ins, especially Silver Efex and heartily recommend them. In my opinion it is one of the best bargains out there in PS plug ins. The Topaz stuff is terrific, too. One other to check out is Perfect Effects which I got for free. I'm sorry I don't have a link for the offer and I'm not sure whether it's still available but a search should produce some results for it.
pemongillo
I found a coupon and got it for $129. I guess I was meant to put off getting it. Now I have all the Nik programs for way less cash than I would have originally paid for just Silver Efex Pro. I', a happy boy.
Hi Stephan.
AlanKlein
They had a special for Topaz BW for President's day about a month ago. I paid $29 for it. Here' a good comparison.

http://www.ronmartblog.com/2013/03/comparison-silver-efexvs-bw-effectsvs.html
Flickr gallery: https://www.flickr.com/photos/alanklein2000/albums
tudor_apmadoc
I started off using Silver Efex Pro, loved it. However, I saw a tutorial online on using Lightroom to do B&W conversions. I started practicing and found now that I do all my conversions within Lightroom.

I love the ability to use the color picker to select the sky, part of someones clothes, etc and then adjust that individually.

Here are some examples of Color and the Lightroom

B&W : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/9329731254/
Color : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/9325699670

B&W : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/13017525923
Color : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/12957548435

B&W : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/12425071735
Color : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/12425544484

B&W : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/12172559033
Color : http://www.flickr.com/photos/52027561@N00/12158880223

pemongillo
Thanks Tudor. I have been doing my own conversions in Photoshop for about 10 years. I do very little color. I want the plugin to help me tweak things a little easier and make it less trouble to get some effects that are difficult to do to in PS. Thanks for the pics.
tudor_apmadoc
I have done Photoshop as well, find the Lightroom approach to be much more intuitive. The non destructive nature is a huge plus as well
Spearhead
I have converted in Lightroom, Photoshop, Silver EfEx and a number of plug-ins that I didn't keep. While I have some basic "looks" I use in Lightroom when I need to crank stuff out, things that matter get done in Silver EfEx. The control is excellent. If Lightroom added U-points, I might be less inclined to use Silver EfEx, but I would still find it more flexible.
Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal

david_henderson
Silver Efex will get you places that would be difficult or time-consuming to create in Lightroom or Photoshop. Sometimes that's good, sometimes awful. Personally I'm pleased I've got it , even if most conversions are simply done in Lightroom. I bought the entire Nik set a few years back, and probably paid a lot more for it than I'd need to now if the figures in this thread are anything to go by.
