kivis
Like to get an external flash. I shoot with a Nikkor 16-85 zoom. Want to get an external flash but I am clueless. Don't want to have to spend more than I have to. Need for indoor events, weddings, speeches, etc. Open to third party. Need advice.
kivis Cameras, lenses, and fotos
owen_omeara
I use a Nikon SB 800 with my d7000 and have wonderful results.

-O
bob_hamilton2
The Nikon SB-800 was discontinued some time ago. The better used ones are still selling at premium prices. I'd go for a new Nikon flash, something like the SB-700.
Wouter Willemse
I'd get a SB700, or a Metz compatible with Nikon. I have the SB700 myself, and it's easy to use and can do nearly any trick you're likely to ever need. Unless you need more power, it will be a safe and sound choice.

rodeo_joe1
For around the same price of the SB-700, or slightly less, you can get the far more powerful Nissin Di866 MkII. Build quality is on a par with Nikon's speedlights and it offers i-TTL and CLS compatibility. Recycling time to full power is about 4 seconds with NiMH cells and the batteries are fitted in interchangeable holders for a speedy battery changover.

Event photography needs power, and the Nissin offers a valuable extra stop over the SB-700. It even slightly exceeds the power of an SB-910. I was able to light a barn-sized building with bounced flash off a 20ft high ceiling with my Di866 - OK I had to raise the ISO to 1600, but at least the flash made the picture possible.
duane_creviston
Ditto for the SB-700. Works great on my D7000 or my older D5000. The D7000 will trigger the SB-700 remotely off camera.
Duane
