To our friends at B&H and Adorama and other NYC stores

Recommended Posts

I'm safely at home - but I know that we still have no power at the Adorama offices and that our Distribution Center in New Jersey was still closed today.

We have an emergency employee support line which was down this morning but is now up-and-running; we've been promised an update on that later this evening, and I'll be updating on Twitter @HelenOster as soon as I get any news.

Thank you all so much for your good wishes and the messages of support. It truly does mean a lot.

Helen,
Your announcement in this thread that Adorama was functioning was personally very helpful. I put in a rush order, for next day delivery, of a portable radio and batteries for my sister in Long Island. She's without power, otherwise O.K., but no working radio. The salesman suggested cheaper shipping, which would still arrive in a day or two, but I insisted that I didn't care, even if shipping cost more than the item. According to UPS tracking it's out for delivery today.
Best regards.
To everyone, I'm worried that there's been nothing from Henry Posner or anyone else at B&H. Hope they're O.K. They're three blocks from the Hudson River but, as I recall, are higher in elevation. Also, it's a multi-floor store.
I worried about J&R, another of the good NYC stores. It doesn't concentrate on photography, although they do sell a wide variety of cameras. Also, they sold me, among other things, the IPS monitor I use for photo editing. They are near to the World Trade Center and had to close for some time after September 11, 2001. This time their store there, on Park Row, is closed because of lack of power, but they are up and functioning on the web.

We're very touched at your concern. It's Thursday morning. We've been back 100% since mid-day yesterday. Right now I'm in our Manhattan offices; the store is open, the phone lines are humming and the warehouse and shipping departments in the Brooklyn Navy Yard have been up and running since approximately 5:30am Wed.

OTOH my house has hot water but no electricity or heat and probably won't until the weekend or thereabouts. :-(
Since commuting to Manhattan was all but impossible until this morning and I have no access from home, my comments here are late. A tip of the proverbial hat to Helen and all our friends at Adorama.

I've just come from Essex Camera Repair in Carlstadt, NJ.

Mr. Kim's shop sustained some flooding from the terrible effects of Sandy and the overflow of the Hackensack River in the Meadowlands area.
The whole industrial park area in eastern Carlstadt and Moonachie was hit, as were the trailer homes south of Teterboro airport. My old house near the school took on 5 ft of water.

Governor Christie's entourage was here this afternoon meeting with local emergency teams for TV news ops.
Essex Camera Repair has done many wonders for me over the years. Mr. Kim's friends and family are helping to clean up and are doing their best to get up and running again. I will be sure to give them much repeat business in the near future.

Best wishes and speedy recovery to all Tri-State area photo businesses and P.neters out there !
