shots worth sharing

Last week I bragged about spring in the northwest, but now I have to acknowledge that not in all of the NW has spring arrived. I visited my folks in Joseph, Oregon, near Wallowa Lake in the Wallowa Mountains, far NE Oregon. It is indeed still winter there.
I wanted to show a little of what late winter is like there, and at the same time show three different lenses. All taken with the K5lls.

00bNvL-521707584.jpg.26335eb298d5a6605c4096999af579b8.jpg

Howard,
I worked over the Celestron photos quite a bit, and the blue was real on the mountain. This forest area was in cloud shadow, and when I tried to warm up the photo, it lost all of its contrast. I was trying to keep the yellow in the trees, and was unable to do it without leaving the rest of the photo with its native blue cast. Just for the record, the Celestron was extremely difficult to focus on the mountain. On a clear day I have been able to get clear focus, but on the day I was shooting through it, I had a devil of a time.

00bNwo-521727684.jpg.f700a9bc350a06b3f451ffc8c5fd2b9d.jpg

It has been a long time since I have posted on PNet but John's first photo made me get back in the saddle. This is a different take on the same beautiful spot. This is from a trip to Joseph last year between Christmas and New Years and we had a great time in such a magical spot.

My second image was from today. I never really did ask any of the host of doctors what was reasonable as far as excercise post fractured ankle, DVT, Pulmonary Emboli. Well, my wife has told numerous people that hiking and being in pretty good shape is probably what kept me alive, so there you go. On Friday the ortho took me out of the boot which I had already begun to do and gave me a brace. Was going a little stir crazy so took a walk up the big hill behind my house. First short hike since this ordeal began. I guess I'll call this: "Second Chance."

John - By setting the grey point in the clouds and pulling in both ends of each of the RGB histograms, I was able to take out the overall blue cast but kept it in the shadows. The cloud edges became a little over red but not unpleasant. This was for picture #2

@Bob, love to hear your "2nd Chance" story and that you look great in the picture. Life throws us lemons with ordeals and you have turned them into beautiful inspirations for others. Your fridge picture reminds me one of Justin's profile signature photo. It has a breath taking view and a great choice to find strength from.

Long Beach Peninsula, WA
With school on break for a week, my wife and I were privileged to have four teenagers join us for three days of vacation at the Long Beach Peninsula on the SW Washington coast. We all had our share of fun. We let the kids roam on their own for a full afternoon while we hiked miles on the wild beach trying to track down a pair of rare Arctic Snowy Owls that have wintered down from Alaska.
Long Beach is a very unpretentious part tourist town, part working fishing community. Amazing restaurants too. About 25% of the nation's oysters are raised in these hereabouts.
While I brought my Canon stuff for birds, snapshots were easily mastered by the Q. Now that I've used this little thing for a month and better understand its limitations, I'm enjoying the portability quite a lot. The metering and accurate exposures have been very impressive, especially in our changing weather of February.

South Bend Pano

Heading north towards home, we stopped off for some fish and chips at a scenic working oysterman town of South Bend. A storm was approaching, and the rainbow laid out before us. This was an iPhone 4 pano made with the free Microsoft Photosynth app.

Good to see you out and about a little Bob!
.
We are having a great storm cycle so powder skiing here is great right now.
Thursday the local mountain was reporting 15" at 4am and updated it to 20 by noon and it just kept coming down. Very low moisture content so it's what you call "Champagne" powder. We took our son out of school and had a family hooky ski day. I brought the K-5 & 18-135
<a title="IMGP0516 by MattB.net, on Flickr" href=" IMGP0516 src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8532/8497213724_8e1a2ab10f_z.jpg" alt="IMGP0516" width="640" height="424" />
.
We also had a moonlight ski to the local Nordic club's bonfire. A fun and pretty but chilly night to be out on the town trails.
K-5 & da15
<a title="IMGP0786 by MattB.net, on Flickr" href=" IMGP0786 src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8499876442_a09b039824_z.jpg" alt="IMGP0786" width="424" height="640" />
.
Finally, these flamingos showed up in our yard as part of a community fund raiser. I liked how they looked against the snow in the morning sun.
<a title="IMGP0741 by MattB.net, on Flickr" href=" IMGP0741 src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8238/8499413726_481df2878a_z.jpg" alt="IMGP0741" width="640" height="424" />

Thanks Hin, Dave, and Matt. Hin, I do have to admit I did emulate Justin's outdoor adventures/images and have borrowed some of his techniques in order to better my images. He was such a helpful guy I didn't think he would mind.

PS Everyone. It might be better if no one tells her I was up hiking behind the house so soon. I did take my cell phone just in case.
