Learning LR4 book or videos

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of using LR4 to manage and process all my scanned images and digitally shot images. I have a fairly basic knowledge of Lightroom but am interested in understanding more about it.
I've always bought books but am open to buying videos. So far I have a couple of books in mind, Martin Evening's LR4 book and Scott Kelby's LR4 book. As for vidoes I've heard about Lynda.com (subscription-based) and George Jardine's videos (one-time payment for each series, Library, Develop, etc.).
Are there any others that people can recommend in either format and which format do you find to be more useful or better.

I have Kelby's Lr 4 book on my iPad. It's pretty good. I also have Martin Evening's book called "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers" on my iPad but I haven't read it yet although it got some good reviews. Awhile back I purchased Michael Clark's eBook on Lightroom but didn't think it was all that good. You might also consider free video podcasts from iTunes. I've collected a bunch of "Lightroom for Digital Photographers" and "Photoshop for Digital Photographers" both by Michael Rather, but I haven't watched too many yet.

Julieanne Kost's videos are great. I'd rate George Jardine's videos as superb, after all he was a member of the Lightroom team.

And then there are Matt Kloskowski's Lightroom Killer Tips
Matt is a bit fast-paced in his explanations.

Between the Luminous Landscape and Jardine videos which do people prefer?

Michael and Jeff would kill me but if you want just intensive, not an ounce of ‘entertainment’ or bantering value, go Jardine. A 35 minute video covering one aspect of say the Basic sliders is 35 minutes of non stop information. The new series is a mere $25.

If you want to get an idea of George’s style, here’s an awesome free video on converting images to B&W using both Photoshop and Lightroom. As you’ll see, not an ounce of fat. All content:

Some good recommendations above. I have found Victoria Bampton's "Lightroom 3 The Missing FAQ" book to be excellent. Before you complain, I know your question is about LR4. I have not seen the LR4 version yet, but based on my reading & use of the LR3 version, this book, available in softbound book or e-book, is better than either Kelby or Evening. It's available on Amazon, but the last I looked, it's a bit cheaper from the original source.

Dennis, Victoria has updated her book for version 4.0 and yes, it is superb and a must have reference. I find it very valuable to look up certain items of interest or confusion. So it’s necessary in addition to any of the video’s mentioned (Jardine, Kost).
