I live in Brazil and I am going to New York next week, for a few days, and I am trying to find any store to buy a Nikon D700 or D800 but it is not easy. I tryed several places and in all of them they are out of stock. I tryed Best Buy, B&H photovideo and J&R. Is there any suggestion? Thanks for help. Chico do Vale

Adorama shows the D700 in stock (as of now)

Be aware they, like B&H, close early on Friday and are closed on Saturdays for the Jewish Sabbath.

Actually, B&H also has new D700 in stock: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/570162-REG/Nikon_25444_D700_SLR_Digital_Camera.html
If you are in Manhattan and you like cameras, B&H is a must visit locaion.

D800 can still be a bit tricky if you don't have more than a few days. I just checked with my local store Keeble and Shuchat here in California. They sometimes have it in stock and the clerk told me that if they don't have it, they can typically get the D800 within 3 days or so. The D800E, however, currently may take up to 3 weeks of waiting.

In New York City, another reliable store to check is J&R on Park Row, not far from the World Trade Center location: http://www.jr.com/information/directions.jsp
Again, if you want the D800, perhaps you can order one as soon as you get there and hopefully they'll have it before you leave, depending on how many days you have in NYC. Since some D800 has this well publized AF issue, I would rather not mail order one and have it shipped to NYC for you; just in case you get one with problmes, which can happen to any camera or product for that matter, getting it exchanged in time could be an issue.

As Brooks says, Adorama and B&H are closed on Friday afternoons and all day Saturdays. They are also closed this coming Sunday, July 29 but normally they are open on Sundays. J&R is open 7 days a week.

While not a premier source of photo equipment, the large electronics store "Best Buy" has several locations in NYC and has had the D800 in stock and ready for immediate sale at many times during the past month or two. What you are facing is this: most pro and serious hobbyist photographers, along with everyone else, pour into B&H and Adorama (and to a much lesser extent J&R Computer) and flood their websites with orders. These are very trustworthy retailers. They develope long wait lists for new popular products. Nikon allots a certain number of cameras to these stores, but also allots a number of cameras to stores that don't specialize in photography.
Such a store is Best Buy. It is more of a huge TV and consumer electronic store chain. Pro photographers aren't clamoring to these stores. That is why if a Best Buy gets a D800 or two in stock, they can sit there for a week or so--they have no back order list to fill and whoever walks in just gets one. Of course, they only get a very small number per shipment so you have to get a little lucky, but it is a place to check out if you are set on a D800.
I hear the backlog of orders at B&H and Adorama may be getting very small now, so you should at least check with them, too, when you arrive.

Although they are great, B&H and Adorama are high volume stores. I've had the experience of seeing something in stock on their website but sold out by the time I arrived 30 minutes later. Also, the website may list what is in the warehouse, not be what is in the store. For an item like the D800 I don't think you can rely on it being available for pickup unless you have contacted the store and arranged to have one reserved for you. I think you should collect the list of reliable NYC photo stores and be prepared to contact them all until you get what you want. Unfortunately there are also tourist stores in NYC I would not trust.
Two more professional stores are Calumet Photo and K&M Camera.

Both Adarama and B&H are still showing the D700 in stock. I would visit one of them if you want the D700.

However, if what you want is a D800, as far as I know there is still a long waiting list at those stores. I would check other stores if you need a D800 immediately. Perhaps some Best Buy has one. Availability for the D800 should not be an issue any more; you just need to look around a bit.

Francisco, do you have any luck in New York?

And after you get your D800, could you do us a favor and let us know whether there are any defects on your new D800? I am sure you want to check it out thoroughly before you leave.

Thanks in advance.

I communicated with Francisco via e-mail. It looks like he bought the last available D800 at some Best Buy in New York.

On a related note, I just went to my local camera store Keeble and Shuchat http://kspphoto.com/. They had around ten D800 in stock. They sales person there told me that Nikon is providing them a good supply. For the D800E, there is still a two-to-three-week wait. I also asked him about the "left AF point issue," and he said he hasn't come across it.

So in case anybody needs a D800 immediately and can't find one locally, K&S does mail order within the US.
