D7000 retail packaging

Hey guys,
I'm getting ready to buy this camera, but I see two different retail packaging styles online. Can anyone enlighten me on the difference? Is one an older packaging or is one from out of the US? Both are the D7000 + 18-105 mm lens kit.

Thanks in advance!

Every new Nikon US product I've bought in e last several years came in a box styled like the one on the left. But don't

go by pictures - check that the seller is an authorized Nikon US dealer (you can actually google a list of those) and

advertising a US product. If in doubt it doesn't hurt to call the seller, if they're any good they can answer questions like

"is it an official US item" on the phone.

I'm trying to remember if I saw a box similar to the one on the right in the Caribbean Islands last year... but I wasn't really looking at bodies - more at lens.

Every US Nikon I've purchased looked like the Left image.

I'll just throw another vote in on top of the stack. The left box, with the gold bar along the bottom, is definitely a Nikon USA version; all of my cameras have come in a box like that, and every box I've ever seen at a retailer, whether it was a local big-box store or a specialty camera shop. Looked up some unboxing videos online as well. I've never seen one similar to the one on the right; if it is a real box, is not from the US.

Someone at Nikon should tell us, as

worldwide customers, whether packaging is

consistent in shape and color, or varies by

country. They would do well to display

packaging by market on the regional Nikon

web sites. It would be most reassuring to

loyal customers.

Bill, I think Nikon's response to that would be to just buy from an authorized dealer. I don't know why they'd be open to helping you to bypass normal distribution channels. You are free to check their website or to call them to verify a seller.

Just for future reference in case anyone else is curious, but I contacted Nikon USA and they told me to purchase from an authorized dealer and that they couldn't tell from just looking at the boxes.

This thread has been around for 4 days. I am curious that nobody has identified in which countries the packaging on the right is sold. I don't think I have seen one in person.

BTW, B&H does not sell gray-market Nikon DSLRs (except in one occasion I know when B&H messed up, but that was not intentional). You can/could get gray-market film SLRs from B&H and can still get gray lenses, flashes, and other accessories, but not DSLRs.

L Roth did, three posts up, Halifax, NS is in Canada, which would explain the bilingual english/french packaging.

I didn't miss the post but missed the point. I had assumed that Canadian packaging was identical to those in the US, and therefore what L. Roth saw was gray-market imports into Canada. Maybe that dual English/French packaging is indeed for the Canadian market.

I used to go to Canada somewhat frequently 20 years ago. Packaging there was typically dual English/French already back then, but I haven't been there in some 15 years and Halifax is not in Quebec, so the connction didn't click for me.

In any case, Nikon cameras tend to be more expensive in Canada than in the US. It doesn't seem to make sense for people to import from Canada to the US. Usually it is the other way around. Typically gray imports come from Asia where stores such as B&H and Adorama can get heavy discounts when they buy in bulk and then import into the US themselves to undercut Nikon USA. E.g. once I bought a gray-market Nikon remote control and the instruction is in Japanese only.
