Which factors should dictate the choice of focal length?

<p>Even the most modest of lenses can be used to good effect with thought.</p>

<p>The 50 f1.8 is a good example, just get close to the subject, to really minimise focus distance, and aim for background separation, have the subject as far away from the background as possible, also, tilt the subject so they are at an angle to the camera and focus on the front eye.</p>

<p>Simple techniques like this really will maximise narrow dof even on modest lenses.</p>
