canon FP

I don't think that Canon ever made public production numbers for the FP (or any classic SLR for that matter). With a serial number of 162685, we know that Canon made at least 62,685 FP cameras.

Peter Dechert, in his Canon SLR book, states that the FP was in production from September, 1964 until March, 1966.

The Canon Museum website states that Canon did make black FP cameras.

When I think of unusual Canons the FP comes to mind: a meterless body with an available clip-on meter accessory!

How very odd, given that its metered FX sister came to market months earlier...a bit of a noggin-scratcher, that. And I

wonder what an FP plus accessory meter cost compared to the FX? Surely FP sales were much fewer, and they seem much rarer today.

As a marketing non sequiteur by Canon it rivals their EF-M, the manual focus-only body made for EF series lenses.

Retail prices from a Bell & Howell catalog from around 1966:

Canon FX body only $113.95 (chrome)

Canon FP body only $73.95 (chrome); detachable FP CdS meter $29.95

Canon Pellix-QL body only $223.95 in chrome, $243.95 in black

Canon FT-QL body only $163.95 in chrome, $183.95 in black

Canonet QL 1.9E $99.95

I suspect that the FP meter is much, much rarer than the camera itself.

Actually I think Canon marketed the FP as a "pro" camera (hence the "P").

This was (sort of) Canon's version of the plain-prism Nikon F.

Many, many years ago, I recall seeing a picture of a combat photographer in Viet Nam with a few Canon FPs' hanging around his neck. I remember being surprised because most combat photographers of the day used Leica Ms' or Nikon Fs'.
