zlight_b
does the IQ really improve if lenses are "optimized" (as in fine-tuned for the body - not sure what the right term is!) for the Nikon 300?
SCL
It doesn't optimize the IQ, but it does optimize focus.
rodeo_joe1
Correct focus and IQ are two completely separate issues. IQ is a combination of definition, contrast, flare, colour fidelity, lateral and longitudinal colour aberrations and probably a few other things that I've forgotten about. Whereas AF fine-tuning simply improves the accuracy of focus - maybe.

If you're not experiencing any front or back focus issues with your lenses, then you don't need AF fine-tuning. Besides, the accuracy of AF will vary with the lighting conditions and how you habitually use your camera, as well as the focal length setting if it's a zoom lens. For example, the focus and then recompose method won't give the most accurate focus even if you fine tune your lenses.
