How to optimize photos for Facebook albums?

As of today (knowing Facebook this could change tomorrow) 4:3 photos are shrunk to 720x536, or 536x720 if

portrait, stripped of EXIF, and rewritten as JPEG quality 85 with 2x2 chroma subsampling, probably with libjpeg. So

that's the best size and encoding to post, in order to minimize re-artifacting. Pictures display larger than

that, which is perhaps why they look fuzzy.

 

Any other tips?

<p>I've been meaning to test -- if you upload with those specifications, will they skip their processing and post your version directly? Or do they resample anyway?</p>

They don't resample, but they do rewrite, because I notice the EXIF is different.

Well, half a year later Facebook photos have changed. Now they allow 960x720 and use progressive JPEG. Other settings are the same.

ImageMagick, GIMP, (I believe) FastStone. At Q6, Photoshop produces quality 86 with 2x2 chroma subsampling. Possibly Save-for-Web can do it also - you'd have to ask in a Photoshop forum.
