ray_fenio
I just saw some of Kevin Cooley's night or low light photographs and wondered if
anyone knows what camera equipment he is using.
richardsperry
Are those model rockets that he's using? Cool idea.
maury_cohen
You could always ask Mr. Cooley: http://www.kevincooley.net/
woolly1
I'm guessing 5x4 using small aperture.
No noise on long exposures, and all 5/4 crop ratio with high detail level.
richardsperry
Those aren't really long exposures, Clive.

If those are model rockets, they are .5 to 1 second long max.

That is not long exposures.
woolly1
@ Richard

Well most of them look like long and multiple plane trails ...

http://www.kevincooley.net/#1136477/nachtfluge

On frame two of the linked album I count in excess of 60 trails. Assuming it's just a minute between take-offs that is an hour according to my watch. Plus the time it takes the last plane to traverse the sky.
That is a long exposure for such a clean image. I know my D200 & D300 will start glowing purple in the corners of the sensor at an hour's shutter opening.

I'm not talking about the rocket shots - of course they are sub 1 sec ... the sole person in them can't stand still so long.
richardsperry
http://www.google.com/search?q=kevin+cooley&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1075&bih=845

I can't post the actual images I am referring too. It is a TOA violation.

But those are model rockets going off, in most of those I have linked.
He also has pics of airplanes taking off, those with multiple trails are much longer exposures, of course.

http://www.thefstopmag.com/?p=904

The first pic in this link is a model rocket.
The second pic, appears to be a two stage model rocket.

Those are only a half second to a second long exposures.
richardsperry
Clive, Just looking at the pic...

Nachtfluge is at least 30 seconds long.

Might be a minute long exposure.

I doubt much longer than a minute though.
woolly1
I'm talking of the plane trail exposures. You have attributed my camera 'guess' to the rocket pics.
The long exposure image I was looking at is the penultimate in the article you linked to.

Confusion reigns supreme .... :-)

Actually in the interview Mr Cooley states he uses military flares as they have a 'hang-time' in the air of 8-10 seconds.

Aha! On further reading ...

The camera I used is a Linhof Technikardan 45s with a 135mm Schneider apo-symmar lens......exposure of four or five minutes at f22.

That was just for the flare shots. Give the man a cigar for a correct guess!

Clive, Just looking at the pic...
Nachtfluge is at least 30 seconds long.
Go to the next frame - see 'next' at left of photo. Not the beach shot, ok.
Mmmm, 60 take-offs in half a minute. I don't think so.... be a bit crowded at the end of the runway ;-)
richardsperry
Duh. I r sofa king... The fact that the flare trails have "ended" was not a clue to me with Glenlivet on my brain. Thanks for the clarification.
ray_fenio
Thanks for the response. I thought it was large format but wondered if it may be D3 or D700.
I've shot transparency film at low light but not negative film. Cooley is using Portra but does anyone have
any suggestion beyond that.
