I enjoy stark landscapes (which is why I like the Southwest so much I suppose). Anyway, I was out a couple of weeks ago searching for a bird shot but really had no luck. This shot is from the same series as my goose portrait last week.

The area I was in is a protected breeding area and closes at sunset, so I was driving out slowly watching my surroundings. The view over the pond, the dead trees, and the nearly full moon looked nice so I snapped off a few frames.

I was playing with my new zoom lens and this bird was nice enough to pose for me.

Larry H. - Howdy neighbor! I live near Atlanta so I guess we are neighbors. I'm not sure which body you were using but I would have bumped the ISO up to 1600 or even 3200 and clean up in LR 3.4 or ACR 6.41 or DPP. Stop your lens down to about f/5.6. Also I use center weighted metering for changing contrasty lighting like you encountered. I also set back button focusing which helps me focus quickly when photographing local ballet.
No I don't want to go back to Tri-X pushed in Diafine! Julie Bernsteins example and data show what new cameras can do at higher ISOs so don't be afraid of pushing the ISO rating. Not having to shoot film at concerts and dealing with those limitations is liberating. We could have never shot available darkness in the old days with color film except for GAF 500 - pushed and that would have looked very rough.
Good luck!

I know this is late, however I had a busy week shooting product for several catalogs, and a video shoot that just killed my three-day weekend as I'll be editing from here till Tuesday... or the beer does me in, whichever occurs first.

Lots of great submissions here, I am impressed. Many of you cranked up the game and came out swinging.

Here's my submission, something I threw together a few hours ago in the Garage. I'll call it Rose in Rain. Shot on a 7D, through an old 1963 Vivitar 200mm f3.5 preset. With 18 aperture blades, I call it my Gaussian Blur Machine. Enjoy.

Keep shooting.

00YnFq-362993584.jpg.11bbc5e39c9b4852664a428f50ccc45a.jpg

Sacramento County Fair fired up today. Lots to do with our local FFA Chapter. But, I did get away for a while this AM to take some shots down "Carney Row" before they got going. This is one of course of the colored goldfish bowls; just a ping-pong ball toss away from a new pet!

00YnFr-362995584.jpg.f2269eb87947d815cc26b0a05bb3eeab.jpg

I haven't been able to get out this week because of writing commitments, so here's something from the Royal Windsor Horse Show. It's someone with quite a well known name:
Jessica Springsteen
<a title="Jessica Springsteen on Cincinnatti La Silla by Peter Meade, on Flickr" href=" Jessica Springsteen on Cincinnatti La Silla src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5134/5726667200_6d5a0c5920_z.jpg" alt="Jessica Springsteen on Cincinnatti La Silla" width="426" height="640" />

Camera: Canon EOS 7D
Lens: EF85mm f/1.8 USM
Exposure Mode: Manual
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 85 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: On, Fired

Strobist Info: Canon 430EX II camera left shooting through a white shoot-through umbrella triggered by the Canon 580EX II flash mounted to the camera. The 580EX II was set to "Wireless: Enabled, Master: Disabled" which means it did not help light the scene but just acted as the master remote. The flash output was set to manual.

Oh man! I missed Thursday! Here is one of the most important photos that I've taken in a while (to me, anyway!). This is my son. He's about 2 hours old in this photo, taken Monday:
