rob_wall
I successfully migrated NikonScan 4.02 to Win 7, installing it in a virtual Win XP machine. The software works but crashes frequently. Sometimes it crashes after one scan, sometimes after 10. The scanner was rock solid on my old WinXP machine.
I have tried downloading and installing the Viewscan driver and this does not make any difference.
Any thoughts?
William Kahn
Silverfast has Windows 7 software for the Coolscan 5000, both 32 and 64 bit. Try the trial version and see...
rob_wall
William thanks. I'm staying with NS because of the superior automation with the SA-30 and SF-210.
bgelfand
I am running NikonScan on my Windows7 x64 system using a Coolscan V. The same should work for your Coolscan 500.

1) Download and install VueScan http://www.hamrick.com/index.html

2) Install VueScan before attaching your Coolscan to the computer. Then plug in the CoolScan. It will pick up the VueScan Drivers.

3) Download Nikon Scan 4.0.3 http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61#Anchor-7

I know it says "Vista Only", but it works under Windows 7 x64 as well WITH the VueScan Drivers. 4.0.2 does NOT work under Windows 7.

4) Install Nikon Scan 4.0.3 directly under Windows 7, but chose the option NOT to install the drivers. NikonScan will use the VueScan Drivers.
My installation has been working perfectly for the past year-and-a-half. I can even use NikonScan as a TWAIN driver to scan directly into PS CS5 (32-bit version).

You also have the option of using VueScan with your CoolScan, or in my case, with my Epson flatbed scanner that is not supported under Windows 7.

curt wiler
There are plenty of discussions here about tweaking the Nikon driver yourself to make it work on Win 7 64-bit. For instance, see: http://www.photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00Ryck
The tweak works, just follow the instruction carefully. I use it to run Nikon Scan 4.0.3 with 64-bit Windows 7 on two different scanners. Other software like Vuescan is not required but you may want it for other reasons. This modified driver specifically includes the LS5000 among the supported scanners.
robert_martin5
I followed the direction on this site to get Nikon Scan working on my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit computer with a Nikon 9000 scanner.

http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64.html

I am using Nikon Scan 4.0.3.
Stock-Photos
Thank you to everyone who replied. All this info will be so useful to me in a short while, after my new computer arrives. I'll be needing to run my Nikon CoolScan 5000's on Win7.

I assume NikonScan is the only software which will support batch scanning with the SF210 feeder...?
robert lee

The software works but crashes frequently. If you're short of space, any $200 netbook/nettop running XP will work just fine.
coomber
Vuescan works fine with the SF-210 feeder, well it does on Linux so I'm guessing it will on Win7!
ian_mackinnon1
I am using it on Vista...it is flaky but not as much as when I run the"vista approved" software..for the love of me I cannot remember why I migrated from XP....many places are still running it..
I just sit by and restart....
andrew_hull
I have Nikon Scan running on Windows 7 64-bit without any work around or anything. Downloaded and it works. I don't know how. I ran 100 slides through the SF-210 last night while out to dinner.
Stock-Photos
Like Andrew, I ran the install of NikonScan for Vista, did no tweaking, and it seems to be working fine on Windows 7 64 bit.
russ_wilson1
Craig, Can you tell me how you initiate the SF-210 feeder with VueScan? I'm using the latest version of VueScan with Mac OS 10.5.8 and a Coolscan 5000. It works great with single slides, but with the SF-210, I get the message "Scanner is not ready - insert a slide." I can't find a way to do that. ??
