phill kneen
I just saw a documentary about James Nachtwey (well it's about the 50th time I've watched 'war photographer' in 3 weeks!). I was just wondering what the 'beeping' noise is from his camera everytime he took a shot? I'm a Leica R and M man you see. Also, does anyone know what lens he was using? It looks like a 17-35 or something like that? Thanks.
isaac sibson
All EOS cameras can be set to (or set not to) beep to confirm AF lock in one-shot AF mode. That is probably the noise you are referring to.
adam_slowikowski
beeping noise is probably the autofocus conformation sound - even professional eos cameras has this function. Lens may be 20-35 once very popular with NG and press photographers (before 17-35 lens)
straightarm
Having seen the film recently, I thought he used 2 camera and lens combinations. One was the wideangle either 17-35 or 20-35, the other 28-70 or 28-80 Simon In black and white everyone's a hero!
joe2
Just wondering... Where would I be able to find, "War Photographer"... Natchwey's work is intense, I'd like to see him in action.
phill kneen
Joe, I'm sure you'll find a copy on the net somewhere. If you have any problems mail me and I will copy the one I have (it will be on pal VHS though, could be a problem depending where you live?) and send it to you. ant_nio_ferreira
He was using two EOS-1, no high-speed MD attached, a 20-35 2.8 lens, a Tiffen or BW uv filter on it (their mount is bigger than other makes) and a 50 1.4 or 28 1.8 on the other body (I remember seeing him attaching a lens hood to it), and lots of Tri-X or Kodachrome film. I think he's using the 17-35 now, and no longer shoots color.
maclean
has anyone found this film on the internet? I saw it in one place, but it was over $100 (I assume it was meant for rental outlets).
stas tagios
On the official movie site (www.war-photographer.com/) you can order a PAL DVD of the film, but not yet an NTSC version, which I imagine and hope will be forthcoming when the movie has finished playing in the States (it's still playing art-houses, at least in L.A.). As for Nachtwey's camera, I believe it was an EOS 1n (It's the camera he mentions in a Popular Photography Magnum portofolio article, and which is virtually indistinguishable physically from the EOS 1), but apparently since the movie was made, he has since switched to an EOS 1V and and an EOS IDs digital camera, according to this Apple site about Nachtwey's work (www.apple.com/pro/photo/nachtwey/). jim_koral
Saw the film last year. IMHO, it looked like he had two EOS 1-n bodies. One had a 17-35mm that never had a lens shade attached. Second body had a fixed 35mm 1.4 WITH a lens shade. Both bodies did not have a booster. I believe his intent is to be unobtrusive with his gear. I am wondering about the storage cartridges Nachtwey uses for his raw film. I've never been able to find them. Maybe he'll sell them on Ebay, since he went digital.
