gordon_yee
Ever wonder what the original F-1 would have looked like in chrome? Check out Lot 321 from WestLicht Photographica Camera Auction 17:

http://www.westlicht-auction.com/index.php?id=185065&acat=185065&offset=1&_ssl=off
vincent_peri
Wow, to me, the chrome makes the camera look toy-like.
Way back in the 1970s, I had a couple of F1 bodies, so I'm not saying that lightly.
User_502260
What would prevent someone from removing the black parts, stripping off the paint and then chrome plating them? All of my Minolta X-700s are black but I have seen photos of chrome colored ones.
gordon_yee
According to the Rokker Files, a chrome version of the Minolta X-700 was sold in Japan for a short period of time. It lacked the exposure lock feature and supposedly sold for a lower price than the black body.

WestLicht's site is multi-lingual. I was viewing the English version when I cut and pasted the link, but it apparently defaulted to the German version. The English version describes the chrome F-1 as a "beautifully custom made chrome version."
gerry_morgan
Fascinating! It has a little bit of the same feeling as the Pentax LX Titan and Millenium editions (i.e. simply not what you're expecting after black has been "embedded" in your brain for so long).

ridinhome
Best item on that page was the F1 with WLF. What the heck is the lens in the picture? I've never heard of ALOS lenses.
marc_bergman1
ALOS lens.

Wikipedia says:

Swiss Post model

Canon delivered a few models for the Swiss Post with a fixed ALOS 3,5/35 lens.

gordon_yee
ALOS is a Swiss company that specializes in document management systems. My guess is that the camera was used for imaging and processing of mail or other documents for the Swiss Post. If so, it the ALOS lens may be a specialized, high resolution macro lens with fixed focus and aperture.

Addendum: The ALOS lens was also mounted to an Alpa body for the Swiss Post:

http://www.camerasdownunder.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=17&pos=1

... as well as a Robot:

http://leonardjoel.com.au/lot_details.php?lot=127287&auction=164

The German version of the catalogue says that the "chromeing" was not done by Canon, so presumably someone else must have.
