Canon Thursday Pic 2010: #10

<p>And thursday rolls around again.<br>

From my side, I decided to do something different. Was playing around shooting stills as such.<br>

This is a brass casting of the Selous Scouts badge my dad gave me years ago. The only momento he kept. Basically they were an elite unit developed from SAS training during the Rhodesian war. My memories were of him disappearing in the middle of the night and just appearing weeks later. We never knew where he was or what he was doing. Of course he would never announce himself when he came home at 2 or 3 in the morning and a few times my mom nearly shot him. Was a different life back then.</p><div></div>

<p>Someone mentioned how beautiful the Moon and it's surrounding clouds were, . . . so out the door I headed thinking I could make it to a nearby lake while the Moon was still low in the sky. Well, you couldn't see the Moon from my house, and by the time I got to the top of the hill, the clouds were moving fast. So I found a place to pull off the main road and get a few shots here.</p><div></div>

<p>Trip to the American River confluence of the middle and north forks was a bust. South side of the Foresthill Bridge had been burnt and the sun had already slipped behind the hills when I arrived. One of my only decent images.</p><div></div>

My submission this week is a photo of my son, taken a couple of weeks ago while I was fiddling around with mixing ambient and flash light. It is one of those rare occasions when he was willing to be photographed.</p>

<p>There was a break in the stormy weather so I called a friend and we went shooting up in the wine country on Tuesday. Plenty of good shots, a lot of the grapes are still on the vine, tho it's a little early for color. We had a great time, as we can crack each other up, and the day ended too soon.<br>

And, whoo hoo! Made it through the first world series game without a major earthquake!</p><div></div>

<p>Last Sunday was my 10 year old daughter's first horse show competition and she placed third in jumping - which was fantastic! One proud Daddy caught a moment of her joy with Canon 1d Mark IV, 200mm f/2.0L, 1/640 2.8.</p><div></div>

<p>Tried to post this one earlier, but I screwed up the posting size.<br /> This is a statue in Berlin at a place where trains used to take children to Nazi Death Camps. There was another train that used to smuggle them away to freedom. The statue was dedicated by one child that safely escaped.<br /> The plaque says "Trains to Life, Trains to Death."<br /> The children playing on it was too dramatic to pass up.</p>

<p>Here's another one from my recent weekend trip to the New River Gorge in West Virginia, USA. It stinks that when you travel somewhere you don't have near the photographic opportunities as someone that lives nearby. Before I ever left, I knew this would be the location that I wake up early and get the first light. I woke up at 5:30am, drove to the lacation, which was in a state park, it was closed so we had to park the truck at the gates and walk about half mile in the dark to get to the overlook. We got there and waited for the sun to peek over the horizon and took some sunrise shots at this beautiful vista. Although the scene was beautiful, its kind of bittersweet knowing that some morning clouds and better fall color would have completed the image, but its a one shot deal and the liklihood of everything coming together on the one day of the year that you're there is slim. For someone that lives nearby, they could visit the location hundreds of times until they got the perfect shot, and it may take a hundred times too, but I only had one shot. Anyways, I'm happy with this photo and the sunrise was beautiful, especially since we were the only people, other than a few deer, at a location that I'm sure was elbow to elbow just a few hours later.</p><div></div>

<p>Still waiting for client approval on posting the family portrait I did this past weekend, so meanwhile here's something from earlier in the month. Detail of a jungle gym in Junipero Serra Park, San Bruno, California. Shot during my lunch break from photographing my husband's outdoor laser tag event (wish I could make those shots public!).</p>
