Still on the chase of the Pileated Woodpecker. I have found a spot that I see several of them when I go, but if they land close enough for a photo op, its nearly impossible to move to shoot them wihout spooking them. They are extremely skiddish. So the motivation for this shot; I had to shoot something with so many photoless trips to the forest. So I shot this titmouse from the front porch.

00XU3J-290459584.jpg.24f45391da27c14ebeead4ec2c5ce494.jpg

The picture I'm submitting this week is more a demonstation to myself how important equipment and technology coupled with good technique can be to capturing the right image. I was actually cooking a meal for a group of 10 people at a retreat. At the end of the meal there was conversation at the table with a few small lights facing the walls around the large room with about 5 candles on the table. I did not want to use flash to disturb the group. This shot was with the 7D and 85 1.2 shot wide open at 1.2 with an ISO of 3200 and handheld at 1/50.... I felt I was pushing it to the edge. Post processing was important and I felt a need to use some noise reduction and a bit of luminosity sharpening as well as this tritone application. When I say low light I mean low light. <a title="lynn by esfishdoc, on Flickr" href=" lynn src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4051/5077705019_216e2e3fbe_z.jpg" alt="lynn" width="539" />

Indy - Humboldt County is on the north coast of Calif. It's in the middle of what remains of the redwood forest. The place is terrific when the weather is nice. The weather is seldom nice.
Ken - You may be interested that N4C (Northern California Council of Camera Clubs) puts on an annual (?) class for prospective photography judges. You may be a natural.
robert c. - Love it.

Nothing new that’s interesting for this week; so I thought I’d post a photo of my neighbor’s really cute grand daughter, taken a few weeks back. This was taken in the twilight hour. Canon 40D, EFS17-55/2.8 @55mm, f4,1/180, Av+1/2.

Capsule review comments for pages 3 and 4 (posts 20 to 39 I guess).

Kerri - always good work from you and with angles, very nice B&W and seemingly vintage old bike (but a little washed out)
Nick - LOL at that ostrich. Giving you the eye, looking for food?
John V - girls action football shot; excellent expression on that gal with the kick!
Matti - good work again and a beautiful old car, from '59 or so?
Dean - concert shot of the singer with some processed color at high ISO on the 7D. it's good - but who? why?
Rob B - and the power of three like cartoon eyes checking you out.
Ervin - simple study of lily plant against the sky; nice & sharp.
Eric G - gal wailing on the sax... again, who & why?
myself - will be four times better with an overcast sky and water flowing in the creek (come back early next year, take my time a glass of russian river red wine...)
Simon T - snail shot one of the first uses your new? lens.
---next page:
Jim S - Humboldt Co. sunset and fence -- excellent indeed and good for moving the sun behind the fence post.
Julie - always a people shot; this time face painters doing their thing. Cute little gal smiling.
Dan F. - Canadian Geeze over the lake; perfect choice of 85mm f1.8 at f5.0 and 1/2000 sec ISO 400 freezing their wings.
Indy -- great 2-person portrait, but something newer next time? ;-)
Barry - I find thee outdoor scuplture humorous; I've been there too; the bottom, right-hand corner does distract and cause 'confusion' I think.
JEG - brilliant colors with that fast & special 3rd party lens.
David Huff - 3rd times a charm! College football game? (Go Irish!)
Eric S. - I see what you mean about struggling to crop this one. I think this example is right on and very rule-of-thirdsy!

Cheers to all and hope to see a few more regulars sometime soon (Harry, Bob, ... you know who I mean) -K.P.

Nahh. It helps to inspire & motivate. ;)

Ken - With the exception of a little sharpening that I do to most photos there is no post processing done to that photo. It's pretty much straight out of the camera. The reason it's white balance and color seem a little off is because the stage was lit with intense LED lighting and no conventional lighting at all.

As for the who? Justine Blazer... a local country singer in my area. As for the why? Because this thread is for Canon shots and I took it with a Canon... I didn't know I needed a reason to post a shot here other than for it being shot with a Canon.
