Some really good work already... and fast stuff already in.
I was lucky to have Monday off as a holiday so I targeted a place I've never been to before: Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve in Sonoma County, along Fife Creek. I brought my EOS 3 and 7D cams with me -- tripod, MLU, and remote cable shutter release. Used just my 24-70 and 16-35 lenses, ISO 100 and LOOONG exposure times. Shoot raw and processed in PS CS5. I doubt I will ever buy or install Lightroom despite the few nagging bugs in PS and Bridge. Even the x64 world they have their dumb issues.

I want to return here (mid. Jan.) when the creek is not bone dry.

Face painting at the Polk Street Blues Festival in San Francisco, a couple of weeks back. I stumbled upon this festival on the way to shoot another festival, and came back the next day to get a few shots.

Wow! So many beautiful images already. It seems to be getting better with each passing week. Here are some of my favourites:

Jeff Spirer - I love your use of light to focus on the face and the guitar
David Storm - Very nice color rendition (a different perspective on fall)
Bueh B. - Wonderful blending of color
Karen Wiltshire - As always, you make simple things look so beautiful
Robert Colameco - Lovely composition
Kerri Albano - Very interesting use of lines and angles makes this photo very unique.
Jim Service - Gorgeous landscape. Where is Humboldt County? Would love to go there sometime.

My submission is a photo of my friend and her teenage daughter who are very close to each other. I shot this last November, when I started playing around with (strobist inspired) studio lighting using speedlites.

I used to look forward to Wednesdays to look at the Nikon thread, and wish there was a similar one for us Canon users. Now Thursday is the highlight! Great shots again. One's that arose a comment:
Scott F. - That surf shot makes you really feel the drop he's about to take.
Vladimir - St. Basil's never ceases to amaze me. Why isn't there more color in architecture?
Karen W - I didn't know lichens came in such bright colors.
Stijn H. - Skaters can not be caged! I love the "prison" feel of the bars and the grey, contrasting with the movement and the red helmet.
Mark S. - When you go back, I hope that red tree at the top still has its leaves - I think you could do something cool with that.
Ron D - The bright red framed in green make that shot for me. Very nice.
Nick - Who knew an emu (?) could have such a wry expression.
John V. - The pink socks really make that work for me.
My shot this week was one of those where I must have framed it 10 different ways, and I'm still not sure I got it right.

00XTqc-290349584.jpg.6ea09d03f9020b42b064edbe62cc0c92.jpg

Canon 5d Mk2 Sigma 24-70 ISO 200 30mm f/18 This was at about 7000 feet along Highway 4 in California's Ebbetts Pass. The area was fascinating because all the mountaintops were rounded and worn down by an ancient glacier which ground along over very dark bedrock. Consequently there was very little soil for plants to take hold, with was the occasional odd colored rock left behind by the glacier just laying around. The wear on the surface of the rock is still readily apparent.

00XTrY-290357584.jpg.bfa516bdc274710e843dd5ad0432ed50.jpg

My capsule review comments of the first two pages (posts 1 - 20):

Jeff -- my fave of yours the past 8 weeks. Whatever slight processing you used it works well.
Scott - excellent surfing shot, not recent, but fairly recent? Where is this?
David S -- lonely blown fall leaf.
Mike D -- motivations for a blurred B&W shot? Random?
Lupo - Tiger! Tiger! ("...my desination") Where's his mouth? Another old photo. ;-)
Dan B - street drummer on plastic buckets. Nice and recent! ;-) (part of this thread's own motivation is just that -- motivation to shoot and think of something to post here, not recycling old stuff)
Vald -- if only that bus weren't in the frame. Maybe a tighter crop to benefit your subject?
Bueh - rather humorous and colorful and sufficiently odd.
Brad -- Hmmm..... not sure what this is all about.
-- page 2 ---
Karen - lichen, and a good study thereof -- straight-forward and in your face.
Stijn - lots of energy skateboarder, they make too much noise too, but I love your shot.
Mark K. - excellent pinkish sky and the construction cranes, love it!
Mark S. - waterfall, good attempt but realize you have more work to do here.
Wayne - blonde and the dog adn your strobe test, very nice.
Hustin - old shot of highway lights, 10 sec. exposure I guess and very sharp.
Robert C. - Philly rower. (Go Giants!) Still, I love this calm, peaceful shot & composition.
Joshua - doesn't count.
Ron D. - toy tractors all garish. Nicely done. Maybe find a better angle?
William K. - such perfect fall colors. Looks a little oversharpened, but a wonderful composition.

Cheers! What were your motivations for your shot this week? Are you planning motivations for next week?

Eric,

Thank you, yep it was a good drop, when the print is large you can really see into the water in the frame bottom left, it has a very three dimensional quality to it.

Ken,

Thanks for your comments, both on my picture and so many others, that you do this each week just adds to the fun of it. It was early last season, so, November 09. It is the point break at Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. It was one of the very few good sessions I got to shoot last season. Hopefully I'll be getting similar shots in the next few weeks.

Great shots all! Ken Papai, I think I enjoy reading your take on other's photos as much as I enjoy seeing them. Thank you, and keep it up, please! And promise you'll go back to that spot when there's some water flowing there and post the results. What an enchanting and inviting looking place. I feel a sense of serenity while looking at your photo. Nice capture!
