ilkka_nissila
According to dpreview.com, the 24-120 is supposed to become available on September 22 while the others on September 2.
ShunCheung
Ilkka, maybe someone accidentally typed an extra 2 such that September 2nd becomes 22nd. :-)
Seems strange that 3 of the 4 lenses will be available on September 2 while 1 is 3 weeks later.
bjørn rørslett
All of them are scheduled to be available Sept 16th here in Norway.

I could only get hold of a pre-production 24-120 whilst the others were production units, so that lens might be delayed compared to the rest of them.

Oh well, time - as usual- will show.
sebastian_rickmann
Hi all,
did someone have already a chance to test this lens using a slide film? How is the contrast bahaviour, comapred to older high quality zooms (i.e. 25-50/4, 50-135/3.5)?
Many thanks for any hint.
ShunCheung
According to Thom Hogan http://www.bythom.com/ (see his comment today, September 1), Nikon USA is now shipping 3 of the 4 news lenses to stores. Apparently the 24-120mm/f4 will indeed be shipped a bit later.
rick_collier
Hey all. Know this is an old thread, but in case anyone is still checking in late....

I've gotten my copy of the new 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR, have had a chance to do some testing, and have started using it.

I basically agree with Bob Krist's assessment. My copy of this lens produces images that are contrasty and sharp to the eye at just about every focal length; Overall image quality is quite good across the entire zoom range.

I've posted a hands-on report on my blog. There's a lot there (including some comparison images). In a nutshell my copy turns out clear, consistent results. Based on my testing and experience to date, I expect this lens will become a favorite. There's really way too much detail to stick it all in a response here (it's a really big post / report by my standards). If you're interested, the post is there for all to see at http://thePhotoTourist.com/2010/09/review-28-300mm-lens.html.

Hope everyone is having fun with the gear we've got!

malcolm_baba
The folks here never seem to fail when I need useful comments and first hand experience. Since my son picked up a used D90 the 18-200 hasn't come off that body once. Novice that I am some of my luckiest images were shot with the 18-200. The extra 100mm on this new zoom takes me right up to the big Sigma for my little surf photo business. Thanks.
Rick Collier, thanks for sharing your assessment and the comparative images, very nice and helpful.
Malcolm
renato_lenzi
I am sorry but Mr. Krist's review even with all his disclaimers does not pass the smell test. Look at the photos comparing the 70-200 VR and the 28-300: I do not know what he did to the picture taken with the 70-200: he is either a totally incompetent photographer or... he had a bad moment? And the photos were taken at F/9?!Other comparison shots were made at f/16?! Come on!
Regards,
Renato
ArthurRichardson
Renato,

You obviously did not bother to read the previous postings in this thread. Bob Krist is not someone I would call incompetent. Especially when I compare his portfolio to mine.
miranti_borvornsin
Contribute to this post I had read before I decided to buy 28-300 in Dec. for my safari trip. Sorry let me cap this "I LOVE THIS LENS" and thanks Bob Krist for spending the time testing and sharing his opinion about this lens.

I normally shoot B/W film and used either the Nikon 28-200 or normal f/1.4 on my F-100. I finally decided to move on to digital first because of this South Africa & Zimbabwe trip that I feel the need to record through a good lens. Of course if I have to left my high heels behind, haul my ass out in to the wild with multiple chances to encounter with snakes that I am so afraid of, the compact will not justify the effort. Second finally Nikon come out with D-7000, something close to the spec I have in mind for a digital. Third, it's getting harder and harder to find a darkroom to rent for printing my pictures.

I attached my cheapie 28-200 to the D-7000 just to try to get myself use to the Nikon digital once after. After discarded the D-100 and was shooting with 5D (not for my project but for work) for a while. I felt that even though the 200mm had turned in to something equivalence of 300mm in film but that's not enough for the safari.

So, I rented the Sigma 50-500 for the trip but returned it before I left because I don't have the proper muscles to operate the lens properly. (haaaaa) Well Thanks to Bob's article I decided to buy the 28-300. I'm very please with the result. You can see the pictures on my flicker http://www.flickr.com/photos/56260952@N07/
