Nikon FTn Braves the Heat

Recommended Posts

I did as planned and shot a roll of Tri-X in my Nikon FTn last Saturday. I braved the glaring sun and near 100 degree Texas heat but it was worth the effort. I used my vintage 135mm Nikkor-Q and 50mm f1.4 lenses with a hand held meter. Did anyone else go out with their Nikon F? Post 'em if you got 'em.

00WzxR-265911584.jpg.1c8e3223be8a5de0c7875dad38c97351.jpg

You're a brave soul, David ! I bet you spent the better part of the afternoon in that buildings cool, air-conditioned interior, eh ? The muskrats, too?
I don't miss the East Texas summers much. Though strolls through some pastures a day or two after a good thunderstorm were delightful!
Where exactly are you ?
Been quite pleasant up here in Jersey. I nailed a few more rolls with my F this weekend, too.

All this talk of heat! It's damn' cold where I am...Those architectural photographs are great, David; the 50mm is certainly one sharp lens. Great tones in the images; one can't do much better than the old Tri-X, IMHO. It's a very handsome outfit, nicely photographed as well. Thanks for the post.

Nice cams, nice pics! You've even got the original, all-metal lenses to go with the camera, from the days when the term "AI" was unheard of. I have a pair of F's from the old days, and the bodies were old when I got 'em. Noticed you used a handheld meter... wouldn't be because the cells in the Photomic viewfinder are dead? :) Pity we can't get the parts to fix the meters anymore. Of course many photographers thought the F looked better with just the plain prism housing.

You've got me itching to dig my F out now. I just have to remember how to set the fork indexing when I put the stuff together... I think I forgot how.

Thanks all. Gabor, I'm in Houston mostly, though I spend time in Baltimore. Jack, they are nutria, the mother had orange front teeth. Henry, it indeed is a handsome camera, I've lusted after a black FTn since seeing one in 1977. Michael, I have two 105mm Nikkors and they are later AIS lenses that render exquisite detail. John, I felt like a dead dog when I was done. Andy, tell me what to use next, my F2S or FE2, with a 50mm AI lens.

My absolute favorite. This lens is better than Harry Potter's wand. There are several versions. My favorite is the multi-coated lens with the screw-on lens hood. Later versions had an attached slide-out hood. Optically excellent, but IMO mine balances in the hand better. I've used mine on the FTn, FM2n and F3HP with equal satisfaction. Unequaled.
