Buying Lightroom 2 - just before Lightroom 3 comes out??

I have been using the trial version of Lightroom 2 and I really like it. I want to purchase it, however, I am aware that Lightroom 3 will be coming out soon. I don't want to buy Lightroom 2 just before a new version comes out. Does anybody know if I buy Lightroom 2 just before a new version if I can upgrade for free? Another option, I suppose, is to just wait - but WHEN is it coming out? I guess that is the question everyone is wondering!<br>

<p>You could just get the lightroom 3 beta for now, it's free and seems fairly stable overall. Presumably it won't expire till right around the final comes out. </p>

<p>The OP concern, I believe, is the cost of the upgrade to LR3 if he buys LR2 now. I don't know the answer to that.</p>

<p>Adobe has a policy for this, but they leave themselves a lot of slack by never committing to numbers.</p>

<p>If you buy an Adobe product after the next version has been <em>announced</em>, Adobe may provide you with a free upgrade if you request one. The problem is they don't ever nail down where that window of opportunity is. Can you buy LR2 right now and get a free upgrade? Can you buy LR2 on April 12th and get a free upgrade? A week before LR3's release date? A week after?</p>

<p>So, in some nebulous period of time after Adobe considers LR3 officially announced, yes, you'd qualify for a free LR3 upgrade—we just don't know when that starts or how long it lasts.</p>

<p>I've been using it in lieu of LR2 due to it's new RAW processing software.</p>

<p>When you download beta 2 it gives a release date for LR3 in June, which is when the beta will expire.</p>

<p>There are no guarantees that the beta catalogs will transfer properly to the full version.</p>
