Peter_in_PA
need more info.

What do you have now? What is it "not doing for you" or what else do you wish it could? What kinds of things do you photograph, mainly? What is your budget? How big do you print, or how do you use your photos?

summerleif
If you are going to invest in lenses, focus on constant f/2.8 tools like:

AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED
and the
24-70mm f/2.8G ED.
carl_becker2
I use Nikkors from 20mm to 500mm and a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 on my D700. There are many topics here if you search. As Peter said give us more info.

boris_miljevic
Most of time, belive it or not, i use AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 18-135 f/3.5-5.6G ED on Nikon D300 and D60 bodies... :)
I also have 50mm 1.8D, and 70-300mm lens...
And i am still waiting for D700, 70-200 f/2.8, 105mm Micro f/2.8,...

I think 70-200 can be the best option for your DX camera D300.
I also had pretty good results with 24-70 f/2.8 and 50mm prime.

CvhKaar
My "always on the camara happely snapping away" lens is a 85 1.4 af-d , but my friends tell me I'm a bit crazy.. :-) ( I don't understand why they say that.. :-) ).
Others favourits are :
60mm Makro 2.8
50mm 1.4 (First AF version)
300mm F4.o AFS
Carl Zeiss ZF.2 Makro-Planar T* 100 f/2.0
12-24 DX AFS.
etc.

john_deerfield
I use the one attached to my camera. The others are just eye candy. :)

I shoot weddings, so the lens that gets the most use is the Nikon 17-55. Given that that's a standard lens, I am usually looking for ways not to use it! After that,

Sigma 50mm f/1.4
Nikon 85mm f/1.8
Nikon 105mm Macro VR
Tokina 11-16
Nikon 10.5mmm
Nikon 80-200mm AF-D
Sigma 30mm
Nikon 18-200 is our walk-around lens.
Nikon 70-300 is our "zoo" lens.

My wish list would be the Trifecta: 14-24, 24-70, 70-200. I would also like to pick up the 60mm Macro and perhaps try the new 85mm Macro VR. And I would LOVE to try a Zeiss lens but I can't bring myself to part with the money for a manual focus lens... I don't trust my eyes!
jose_angel
The Holy Trinity, the no-vibes macro, the turtle fast std and the so-so wide.
The only DX I have had was the 17-55, I liked it so much. Looking at your portfolio I think you will make wonders with this lens.
