More Hockey Editing On Laptop

The college hockey season took Christmas off so I had nothing to shoot from the arena with the majorly bad light cycling.. which meant I hadn't attempted to work on photos from there on this laptop yet..Shot the ice for custom WB and still prefer to 'blow out' the ice to get jerseys.
And so I don't get a complaint asking if I'm showing off, I'm definitely open to opinions on these. I am editing with only the light from the monitor, with the screen open full. All ISO 3200 1/800 F2.8
1.

2. You can sort of see the different color of the ice from the light cycles

3.

4. One shot I really missed on.. got our player in white in focus but the goaltender is blurry

I don't think the Wisconsin red uniforms look too bad but I'm looking at them from the laptop I edited on... should I be 'warming' the shots a little to add more red? The entire TWO games of shots

David,
Very nice photos! Good action captures.
I'm interested in shooting hockey for the first time. I'm planning to start out at the local hockey rink that has some kids and mens leagues. I understand the game very well. I have a very similar lens as you do: A Nikon 70-200 f/2.8. I have a monopod I was planning to use as well.
I was wondering if you could describe how you set up for a shoot.

Where you are physically.

What camera settings you are using.

What you need to verify before the game starts.

Some specific challenges to be aware of (I know that lighting is very difficult, as is the WB due to the ice) and how you deal with them.

Just would like to make the most of my time when I go for my first visit.
Thank you in advance!

Don't use the monopod unless you'll be down at ice level standing where the angle doesn't change when players skate towards or away from you.. unless you have a medical reason that you can't hand-hold the camera.

I shoot the ice in auto-wb at a 1 step below the SS I'm going to be using for the game.. these are 1/800 so I shoot the ice at 1/640 and make a custom WB off of that to use for the game shots. High school boys game I'm going to in an hour I'll be at 1/640 because of a dark arena, and always at ISO 3200, and clean up noise with Neat Image Pro. I always shoot in Manual myself.. but have seen people do well in Av (Aperture priority) and then someone on POTN shot a game in Tv (shutter priority)and they looked good.

As for physical location I never stay in one spot for the most part. I may spend half a period at center ice spots and then the rest of that period in one zone or the other. Shooting through the glass can be good sometimes too if you can get lucky and find a clean spot, usually one of the corners where you can look at the goaltender without distorting them works well and is cleaner than behind the nets.

If you can't move during a period I'd pick the offensive zone of the team you're there to shoot, or of course if you're there shooting both teams, stay in that spot for 2 periods and get both teams shooting at a net and use the other period for shots of individual players like this one of a girl who got cut by the Canadian Olympic team and decided to come back for the second half of the season here rather than red-shirting the whole season

My biggest problem is I don't always look at pictures during a game or I would have tried this one again because of the light cycling. I'll get her again in a couple weeks but I wanted one from her first game back.
It was mentioned that there's not much hockey stuff posted here but it would be nice to see some more for comparisons and ideas.

I wanted to get a bunch of shots (hadn't shot any in our building to work on with the laptop yet) from our boys high school game game last night but they got it handed to them and I only kept 6 shots and stopped shooting early.
