trevor_martin
The best free software would be canon DPP (digital photo professional), which came on a CD with your camera. Alot of people actually like it better than Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom.
py-photography
Works great and can't beat the price. You can change picture styles and the like. Install it and give a workout.

cabbiinc
Zoombrowser (Imagebrowser on a Mac) can also work with your Canon RAW files. But I definitely prefer DPP myself.

Other software can emulate what DPP does, but DPP and ZB use the actual settings from the camera. If you shoot 5 in color, then 3 in black and white, then 5 in color again you'll see those things in DPP. In other software you'd have to guess which ones you wanted black and white, which isn't a horrible thing but I like seeing what I shot as I shot it. If only Canon would add a straighten feature.....
mendel_leisk
What about Picassa? I've not used it personally but it has been recommended to me. FWIW, I could not stand DPP, too confusing and awkward interface. I prefer Adobe Camera Raw, but it is not free.

robert_martin5
If you want the RAW file to open looking like the JPG from the camera, you will need to use RAW converter software from the camera manufacturer. Third party software does not read the in camera settings and uses default values for everything except white balance.
JosvanEekelen
Faststone Image Viewer and Irfanview also process RAW images, although the latter is more a viewer than an editor. I'm not sure however how much these programs rely on Canon's own software in the background in order to open RAW files.
