Vignetting in 6 x 7 wide-angle (45mm) lens with polarizer.

Vignetting often occurs when I use my 45 mm lens in tandem with my

B + W Kaesemann circular polarizer. Both are 82 mm. I'm looking

for the best remedy to the problem. Going to an even bigger filter

with a step ring might work, but that may be cost-prohibitive. I know

that some manufacturers now make slimmer profile PL filters for

wide lenses, but the largest I've found are 77 mm. Any ideas??

Thanks, John

John, I use the Lee filter holder system on my 6x7 for my 45, 135 and 200 lenses. The adaptor ring for the 45mm lens is recessed, bringing the quite thick Tiffen polarizer close enough to the lense to prevent vignetting. I also use Singh-Ray ND graduated filters in the system and have never had any vignetting problems. Good luck.

I'd second the recommendation for the Lee system, whether or not you decide

to use all their filters or some from other makers. Lee have 100mm square

glass polarisers in both linear and circular types, plus a 105mm screw in type

which can fit on via a special adapter to the front of the Lee filter holder. But, I

think that the latter combination might well cause vignetting with the 45mm

lens. Maybe somebody else who has tried that could enlighten both of us?

Incidentally, if the 105mm screw in filter option was open to you, you would be

able to choose from 3 models of B & W Kaesemann circular polarisers and/or

Lee's own version. I'm pretty sure that I saw a mention somewhere recently

that Joe Cornish ( well known UK landscape photographer ) uses the Lee

system coupled with the 105mm B & W circular polarisers on his 5 x 4 inch

large format outfit.

John:

I use the same set up, 45 w/B+W 82mm Cir.Polarizer with no vignetting. Are you stacking the polarizer on a UV? Also agree w/above members on Lee filters, I use the system... they have a circular (rectangular 4x4) polarizer), but your B+W should work fine if it's not stacked. Have you tried closing down the lens a few stops? good luck

I too can recommend the Lee filter system. I use the 105mm circular glass polarizer with all my 67 lenses but for the 45mm it's important to buy the Lee 82mm WIDE ANGLE adaptor ring. The circular glass polarizer is expensive though - but once you've bought into the system it'll be the only polarizer you have to buy.
