michael_kuhne
Excellent captures of NYC street scenes. The lens delivers good quality. One thing that is puzzling to me- the apparent popularity of wearing flip-flops in NYC!! All that hard pavement...!
jgredline
Howard,
Great series all n all, but that last image with the beauty on the scooter completely kicks butt!!!
Angle, composition, scene, perfect in my book!!!
htarragon
Michael - The flipflops were everywhere! I noticed it myself. This are is more known for Jimmy Choos and Manohlo Blahniks - if you don't know what that means-ask a woman $$$$. Is this a sign of the economic times?
Javier - That's why I live in the Bronx and take most of my people pictures in Manhattan; Turn focus, shoot. Thanks for the thumbs up.

Howard

markus maurer
Now I'm pretty confident about the real reason behind taking "street photographs", the girl on the scooter is the photo that tells me a funny story but otherwise?
htarragon
Markus
Light, color, juxtapositions, expressions, body language, beauty, movement, humor. Other than those, I can't think of any more, at the moment.
markus maurer
It's fine for me since you did not ask for critique of your photos Howard and you and the other visitors like what you got :-)
htarragon
Markus - I would welcome your thoughts. I gave you mine on the other thread - was not a critique, just what I would have focused on :-)
michael_kuhne
The area evidently does not suffer from lack of attractive females! Their fluid presence in a street scene can be irresistable for attempts at capture. To be fair, I'm sure plenty of good-looking guys abound as well, who are deserving of such attention. How about skate-boarders and roller-bladers. Are they allowed in NYC? The subject backdrop is life in NYC in your fine shots. I also especially liked that fine athletic lady on the scooter, and found it facinating to see that method of her getting around!
jgredline
Michael,
To be honest, I shoot pleny of males, but they are usually very boring and un attractive to me. I do like shooting the boarders and street performers and such. Those are usually pretty cool.
htarragon
Michael,
Next time I head into Central Park, I'll head toward where the boarders might be. I have the feeling the camera will still try to point at the female of the species :-) Midtown traffic is not the best place to find bicycles, boards, roller skates or scooters, but, as you have seen, there are exceptions.

Actually, 4 out of 13 of my pictures have men as an integral part of the composition.
markus maurer
Howard I'm too biased against this "everything goes with street photography thing" to give you a fair review here but you can sense my overall opinion and I gave you a hint about it as well.

revolver
Great shots.
I love Manhattan for all the "oddities" that happen right in front of you.
When you work there for 16 years you just cant capture all of it on film as is what is stuck in your mind from what you see daily.
Michael, Skateboarders I did not see too often but there was a time when every idiot with a death wish was rollerblading in the city.

raybrizzi
That's my neighborhood! Here are the local pics that I've submitted so far.
http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=805191
The scooter shot, the Blonde family, and Skull girl are my favorites.
raybrizzi
Howard, besides the boarders, in Central Park there is a roller disco scene near the 72nd street crossroad, sort of in front of the bandshell. Usually there on weekends. Very colorful outfits and very serious dancers.
htarragon
Ray, because of appointments I have, I've stuck to only a couple of areas in Manhattan. I've looked through your portfolio and you've reopened my eyes to the city. I used to work on the upper east side and for a while was walking through Central Park to get home to the upper west side. It's been too long. My wife and I were at the sailboat pond and I couldn't remember which crossroad Bethesda Fountain was on. I need to arrange my trips in from the Bronx differently, so I can roam.

Have you been to the High Line yet? I managed to get there twice. It's a great place for a variety of shots.

Les, Chris - thanks - it is a moveable feast. And yeah, the rollerbladers up the major avenues and the motorized scooters doing 7mph in heavy traffic moving at 30mph and more.

Markus - it's not "everything goes". You will never see shots from me that intentionally include homeless, violence, traffic accidents, the gritty city et. al. I will include what is included in the list above in my answer to you, hopefully, in an interesting and technically competent (hopefully better) manner.
Thanks all. Maybe the NYC contingent should meet.
