david_chilvers
Hiya I have a photographers light weight jacket( like a waste coat with some decnet pockets. It was only cheap and i want to buy a decent one with tough pockets etc. One with removable sleeves would be handy so that i can use it in the winter as well as the summer. Has anyone had any experience with these or know where they can be had in the UK thanks Dave
jeff_drew4
This suggestion leaves out the style factor, but some military surplus type jackets may fill your need, reasonably. Usually they are well made, rugged, utilitarian and may come in a variety of colors, like green or black or sand etc.
steve2k
You might check out the Domke Photogs jacket. I recently got one (I've had the vest for years), and it seems like it will fit your needs perfectly. It's not very heavy (none of the others I looked at were either), so if you're planning on trekking the Himalayas you'll want another jacket to wear underneath it - (that's why I got it a size or two big). Not the most fashionable piece of clothing I own, but it doesn't bother me since I'm a bit of a frumpy dresser myself. I have heard that Adorama (I think) sells something like a Tuxedo vest/jacket for those "special occasions", e.g., wedding photos - haven't seen it myself though. Good luck. thomas_t
Dave, I'd second the above recommendation. I bought a size L Domke photogs jacket (I'm a 40-42 jacket size), fits very well, lots of ideally positioned pockets (outer and inner), the sleeves are removable for hot weather. Very solid construction and comfortable. Check out B&H's site for a picture. It is not weatherproof, however, but you can simply put on a goretex outer over it. jerry_lehrer
Dave I always thought that a Photo-Vest or Waistcoat (Weskit) is rather pretentious. I prefer a shabby safari jacket that has seen better days, or an old Army field jacket. They have loads of pockets that can be use if you don't want to carry a camera bag. And when I do carry a bag, it is an old grungy canvas one, not a sexy Billigham or other name brand bag that screams "Steal Me". Jerry
fotografz
Gerald, I don't think it's a matter of being pretentious, but instead being practical. I've used Army surplus in the past, until a hidden rivet scratched the crap out of my 2nd A-24 back. The photo vest I now have has felt lined pockets shaped to fit a film back, and sub pockets for film rolls. Hey, anything if it works, but watch out for exposed zippers and rivets.
