dave_dejoy
Right now, I am interested in moving into the Mamiya RB series. My question is whether I should go for the SD or the basic RB. I want a mechancial system mostly, but I also wAnt to enter this system in a smart way. Thanks for the help.
jim_momary
Do the SD, better film backs (tho you could use the RB Pro S still).
Avoid just the RB67 Pro, the first model, kinda ancient and doggy nowadays.
The SD is probably going to be a slightly newer body, so maybe less 'fatigued'
The SD accepts any and all of the RB lenses.

I have a Pro S and an SD, both bought used. There is not too much difference, from a general concept. Same basic guts and viewfinders, accessories and lenses except for 2 lenses.
RB67 Pro S body vs an SD body are virtually identical in price if you look at KEH.
Go to the Butkus site and read the two manuals, donating kindly to Mike's great site in the process, and see them side by side laid out.

See Karen Nakamura's page here for good comparisons too -
http://www.photoethnography.com/ClassicCameras/index-frameset.html?MamiyaRB67.html~mainFrame

Jim
Either way, best damn bargain in MF in my humble opinion.
jack_welsh
The SD also allows 6x8 film backs.
gary_watson
Research the C and K/L lens fit issue on Pro S and Pro SD bodies. Both bodies, regardless of age or model, can be utterly smoked from heavy use. There are bargains but be patient and shop around.
