Charles_Webster Posted July 21, 2009 Share Posted July 21, 2009
Long lens, stable tripod, real solar filter

I used a 400mm w/ 2X teleconverter and wanted twice that long to make a decent sized image. My shutter speeds were in the 1/100 - 1/250 range as I recall and lens shake was a serious issue.

If you are shooting a total eclipse, you'll need a solar filter right up to the moment of totality, then you need to remove it to shoot the corona and beads, so a real filter that isn't duct taped to your lens is a real plus!

Good luck

<Chas>

Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
matt_hein Posted July 21, 2009 Share Posted July 21, 2009
Need an ND 6 I think that way you don't go blind looging at it. And you don't ruin your gear.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dlambert Posted July 21, 2009 Author Share Posted July 21, 2009
So a polarizing filter won't do the trick?
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
matt_hein Posted July 21, 2009 Share Posted July 21, 2009
It will if the trick is to go blind. The sun is still very bright. What you mainly see is the corona. But you could possibly use a solar filter. Could be the same thing. Search around. Just don't go blind.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Charles_Webster Posted July 21, 2009 Share Posted July 21, 2009
A polarizing filter will not be anywhere near strong enough to prevent damage to your eyes, and possibly camera, if you point it at the sun.

You need a real solar filter. A google search finds one quickly enough.

<Chas>
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
